Despite a host of their biggest names having returned from injury, John Morris’ men again failed to secure victory as they were jeered off Shark Park following a dismal 24-22 loss at the hands of an inexperienced Brisbane outfit.

Having slipped to 8th on the NRL ladder amid a lacklustre mid-season slump, cracks have started to appear in the club’s finals hopes.

While club veteran Paul Gallen revealed the playing group had put their “hands up” over the string of lacklustre results, Gould assured the problem lay with a group of “strong personalities” that needed to fall in line.

“This is a real test for the coach, a first season coach Johnny Morris,” Gould told Nine’s 100% Footy.

“He’s got some very strong senior players in that club, he’s got some very strong personalities.

“He’s got some players that I’ve watched in their careers that have a history of being deluded about how good they are or how well they’re going, or how they value the excellence in their play.

“This team needs a really strong coach right now, he (Morris) needs to pull all that together

“The coach has got a tough job here and the players have all got to support it, they all need to be behind the coach.”

That argument was doubled down upon by Melbourne Storm legend Billy Slater who believed the Sharks biggest names could learn from the squad’s youngsters who kept the club’s season afloat while their mentors were sidelined by injury.

“We’ve been waiting for these guns to come back for the Cronulla Sharks, these experienced representative players,” Slater said.

“All these young guys have been competing really hard and have been doing a great job.

“And then Shaun Johnson, Wade graham…Aaron Woods, Matt Moylan…these efforts from the representative players that are coming back into the team, they’re letting the team down.

“These are Test players and they know that this is what they’ve got to fix.

“When you’ve got your senior players coming back into your side, and the team is going well, and they’re not performing with the same intensity and urgency as the younger guys, that’s letting the team down.”

Gallen revealed Cronulla’s playing group met on Monday to reflect on their form.

“That was all addressed today, and they all put their hands up for it,” he said.
