“If you’re defending him or attacking him, either way, just get in his face and don’t give him time with the ball.

“That’s what he wants, that’s his cup of tea really, is playing around with the defence so if you can just rush him and sort of make him play before he wants to … that’s probably how I’d go at it.

“And then just make him make tackles, he’s only a little fella and he’ll go all day but the more you can tire him out probably the better, so defensively you’ve just got to smother him and be all over him.”

Ponga and Pearce have been club team-mates since joining the Knights at the start of the 2018 NRL season.

The latter will play his first Origin since Game 3 of the 2017 series after Penrith playmaker Nathan Cleary was ruled out of the ANZ Stadium blockbuster with an ankle injury suffered in the Blues 38-6 victory in Origin II.

Pearce has won five games in 18 matches for the Blues and has never tasted a series victory in seven attempts since making his Origin debut as a 19-year-old in 2008.

The 30-year-old has copped the brunt of the criticism for the Blues’ failures throughout his representative career but can complete the ultimate rugby league redemption story with a victory in Sydney on Wednesday night.
