SportAsk the Lurker: Should Wayne Bennett coach the Maroons?
State of Origin: Gold Coast Titans fullback AJ Brimson called into Queensland camp
Gold Coast Titans fullback AJ Brimson will arrive in Queensland camp on Thursday as the 19th man for the State of Origin decider next week. While the Titans enjoy the bye this weekend, Brimson will help the Maroons prepare to face NSW in Sydney on July 10 by participating in opposed sessions at training. Queensland coach Kevin Walters has a high opinion of the lightning-quick 20-year-old, having chosen him in the Maroons emerging squad in January. Brimson represented the Maroons under 20s in 2017 and 2018. Adept in the halves as well as in the No.
Ask the Lurker: Should Wayne Bennett coach the Maroons?
The Lurker returns with another juicy edition, answering all your burning rugby league questions.
We saw an epic State of Origin decider on Wednesday, and there's some pretty juicy gossip to follow it up.
Our man has served up a bumper Ask the Lurker to help you separate fact from fiction.
Read on below.
1 Signing news for the Bulldogs
Niko Štúj: Hey Lurker seeing as the Bulldogs missing out on signing Jayden Brailey. Which other quality hookers are the Bulldogs looking to sign for next season?
Broncos may have let go the wrong quietly spoken old man
Such is the furore engulfing the once-indomitable Brisbane Broncos, former greats are being slave-driven to deliver a rate of Courier Mail rent-a-blasts not seen since Petero Civoniceva was replaced with Joel Clinton. This has seen record numbers of comparisons to ‘my day’ from regulars, including Michael Hancock, Glenn Lazarus and a litany of other greats who continue to front up, which is basically everyone except Andrew Gee.
And any other signing news?
The Lurker: Hi Niko, Andrew McCullough has been spoken about as has Danny Levi. I keep hearing Josh Dugan's name pop up as well.
2 Who will Parra get?
Jake Diesing: Hey mate what’s Parra’s chances of actually signing Welch and where do they sit with the George Burgess situation? Also any truth to the Arrow to Parra rumours and if so will Parra sign all 3?
The Lurker: Hi Jake, no they can't sign all three. Impossible to do salary cap wise. Burgess offer is markedly reduced from the offer earlier this year. Personally, I'd go Welch. Hard-working, strong carry and one of the best offloads in the game. Jai Arrow is an interesting one, if he's smart he gets out of the Gold Coast. I keep hearing Cronulla as a potential replacement for Gallen.
State of Origin III: Everything you need to know
State of Origin III in Sydney: kick-off time is almost here. Here's everything you need to know for the NSW vs Queensland series decider.
3 Papenhuyzen to the Broncos?
Daniel Hillhouse: I have heard Ryan Papenhuyzen to Broncos to play fullback? Any chance? The Lurker: Still a bit of water to flow there Daniel, namely whether Darius plays on. RP becomes a live chance if Darius doesn't continue on with the two years that reman on his deal.
4 Are the Knights thin?
Matty Moller: Any news of the Knights looking to recruit some outside backs....it’s looking quite thin for next year. The Lurker: Hi Matty, not sure why you view it as thin. Ponga, Lee, Ramien, SKD and Hunt would all be starting players in the majority of NRL sides. SKD will be offered reduced offer to stay while Hunt is in a similar boat.
5 Drama continues at the Sharks
Nathan Goodchild: Shaun Johnson to be replaced by Flanagan? If so, any chance the Broncos could nab him?
Qld's Gillett ruled out of Origin III
Queensland coach Kevin Walters says back-rower Matt Gillett has been officially ruled out of Wednesday's State of Origin series decider due to a groin injury. Queensland back-rower Matt Gillett has been ruled out of Wednesday's State of Origin series decider in a significant blow to the embattled Maroons. Barely 10 minutes after saying Gillett would be given until kick-off to overcome a groin injury, coach Kevin Walters returned to tell the media the 20-game Origin veteran would not be playing.
The Lurker: No - Johnson will be retained this weekend against Melbourne. Flanagan came up with some extremely rookie and crucial errors at the back end of the game that were match-defining. As for long-term, I'm not sure how many times I can say it here - Flanagan will be at the Chooks in 2020.
6 Jordan Rapana heading to NZ
Rach N Dan: Are Warriors still in hot seat to sign Rapana for next year ?
The Lurker: Yes Rach N Dan, they are. The Raiders are content to lose him.
7 Who will replace Rapana?
Jordy Bates: If Rapana leaves will we chase Nene Macdonald as a replacement ? #asklurk
The Lurker: No Jordy, Nene needs many things right now, and one of them isn't football. Cotric, Simonsson, Kris, Niko are all the future for the Green Machine.
8 Bunnies still in the mix
Willy Schwartz: Are Souths done chasing anymore players for now after signing Roberts and Sua?
The Lurker: They've just signed Bryson Goodwin for 2020, Willy. They still have 12 players from their top 30 still to re-sign, so I expect them to make a few more plays yet - particularly in the forwards.
State of Origin: Michael Morgan sustains another concussion after friendly fire from Josh McGuire
Queensland utility Michael Morgan sustained his second concussion in 12 days during the Origin decider.
9 Flanagan is leaving
@AdamSte30339848: With Johnson being shit, any chance Sharks keep Flanagan?
The Lurker: Kyle and his management have made the decision to ask for a release from the final year of his contract (2020) at the Sharks. He will be at the Roosters in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The decision is a weird one given it was his father Shane that led the push to recruit Shaun Johnson. I think it's arrogantly impatient from the 20-year-old. What's even weirder is that young Flanagan will join a log-jam of halves at the Chooks including Luke Keary, Lachlan Lam, Brock Lam, rising star Sam Walker and don't forget Latrell Mitchell has declared he wants to play 6 in 2020.
10 Stop trying to make the Walkers happen
@Psycorpion: All these coaches are the same!!... the Walker brothers will make change for the better!!
The Lurker: If all these coaches are the same, why is Craig Bellamy about to record his 300th win? The Walker brothers tactics are simply not sustainable in the NRL.
11 Where to for Walker
John Mags Magnusson: With Manly doing everything to sign the Tro brothers where will Dylan Walker land? He can’t possibly fit under the cap now
The Lurker: He can if he accepts a cut-price deal that he's been offered.
Blues band of brothers give Mitch his Pearce de resistance
Mitchell Pearce finally buried one of the game's most fabled hoodoos, winning his first Origin series ??? in his 19th match for his state.
12 Will Kevvie stay on?
Cameron Maguire: Bennett, Fatty or Kevvie Qld coach moving forward?
The Lurker: Simples…Bennett.
13 Should Origin be moved?
Ben Todd: Why do they continue having Origin on a work/school night anyone with half a brain would realise you'd sell more tickets and get higher tv ratings if it was on a Friday or Saturday night and I'd also be able to have a few beers and not have to worry about driving to work in the morning
The Lurker: Hi Ben, I totally get this view. But this is a business at the end of the day.The broadcasters have cut the numbers and everything indicates Wednesday night is a greater return commercially with more viewers watching the game than when it has previously been played on a weekend. Secondly, it's currently school holidays in NSW. And thirdly, do as I do, crack your first tinny early - and I mean like before 4pm- make an impact on the esky until kick-off, than put the brakes on while the game is on.
14 A Jack de Belin update
George Gardiner: Hey Lurk, where's the DeBelin case atm? Is there an appeal and will it be this year ?
The Lurker: Hi Georgie, you're going great on the Today Show. Big fan. As for Jack DeBelin, his hearing is set for August 22.
15 Sharks on the move
Glenn Acuna: Two Sharks players are on the verge of leaving the club according to Buzz Rothfield. Any truth that the players are Josh Dugan and Capewell?
'I can coach Souths and Qld': Bennett
Master coach Wayne Bennett insists he can coach South Sydney and Queensland at the same time as Kevin Walters continues to be linked to the Gold Coast.
The Lurker: Hi Glenn, I can confirm that the two players, aside from Kyle Flanagan and Jayden Brailey, weighing up their futures are Scott Sorensen and Kurt Capewell. Sorenson knocked back a great offer in March and is now playing NSW Cup because Briton Nikora has gone ahead of him while Capewell has already knocked back a massive offer from the Warriors, but believes he can get more elsewhere than what the Sharks can currently afford.
16 Super Isaako
@WiseBirdius87: Hi mate. With Anthony Seibold suggesting Milford may be the Broncos fullback long-term, what does that mean for Isaako?
The Lurker: Hi mate, Isaako is a winger. If he's squeezed from the Broncos, no less than six clubs would be willing to sign him. Super talent.
