SportEngland crush Australia to reach World Cup final
World Cup semi-final qualification scenarios
Reigning champions Australia are already guaranteed a place in the World Cup semi-finals while Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies and Afghanistan cannot make it out of the 10-team round-robin phase.
England stormed into the World Cup final with an eight-wicket victory over Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday after yet another century opening partnership from Jason Roy (85) and Jonny Bairstow (34).
England, who won with nearly 18 overs to spare, will meet New Zealand in Sunday's final at Lord's with a first-time World Cup winner guaranteed.
Record five-times champions Australia were bowled out for 223, Steve Smith making 85 against quality English bowling with Chris Woakes taking 3-20.
Comment: Mark Taylor: Firing Smith the last piece of puzzle for Australia
Watching Steve Smith at the crease, I see the frustration of a man who desperately wants to make a major impact after a year out of the game. To me, Steve will not feel absolutely comfortable until he can do this so he can say to himself "Righto, I'm back full time now". There will be plenty wanting this to happen before the Ashes. That is not to say he has had a quiet World Cup. His 73 against the West Indies was the type of contribution Australian cricket fans have become accustomed to from him. If not for his innings, Nathan Coulter-Nile would not have been able to play the way he did.
But England's opening pair shared their fourth consecutive century partnership, reaching 124 before Bairstow was trapped lbw in the 18th over.
Joe Root (49 not out) and Eoin Morgan (45 not out) saw England comfortably to victory and their first appearance in the final since 1992.
