Andrew Fifita has taken full responsibility for the moment of madness that cost struggling Cronulla a much-needed victory over the Warriors.

With the Sharks clinging to an 18-16 lead heading into the last 12 minutes, Fifita shot out of the defensive line and levelled Lachlan Burr with a shoulder charge.

It earned the Tongan international 10 minutes in the bin, the Warriors tying things up with the subsequent penalty goal before going on to record a one-point win.

Fifita earned himself a one-match ban for the tackle, while Cronulla’s season is on life support after five straight defeats.

“You’ve got to take ownership (and) he was the first one to put his hand up after the game and say he stuffed up,” teammate Aaron Woods said.

“He didn’t have to get in that tackle but he thought he was doing the right thing for the team by putting pressure on.

“He thought if he could put a big shot on it would lift and motivate the team.

“If he had his time again he wouldn’t do it.

“But it doesn’t come down to one bloke - there are 17 blokes out there.”

Woods denied Fifita is too big a personality for rookie coach John Morris to handle.

He said: “He (Fifita) is a pretty powerful figure - he’s an absolute legend – but he doesn’t push the coach around.

“The coach has the final say on everything. What Bomber (Morris) says, goes.

"We all love playing with the big man (Fifita) and it’s disappointing not to have him there this week.

“He is always positive and upbeat and brings the best out of players.”

Cronulla play an equally desperate North Queensland at Southern Cross Stadium on Thursday night.

Johnson: I was prepared to be dropped.
Cronulla playmaker Shaun Johnson has revealed he told coach John Morris he was prepared to play reserve grade if that was what was best for the NRL side.
