Fresh call to bar Smith from Aussie captaincy© PA/AAP Steve Smith hits out during his second century at Edgbaston. Steve Smith should be barred from regaining the Australian captaincy, at least while Tim Paine is skipper, according to top sports columnist Peter FitzSimons.

Yet rather than making the assertion on moral grounds, FitzSimons suggested that Australia should do absolutely nothing different while Smith was in such outrageous form.

The batting megastar, sacked as captain after the Cape Town ball tampering scandal, launched his comeback in the Ashes with twin centuries in the first Test.

"If I was the Australian cricketing set up I'd say to Steve Smith, 'Steve, I don't want you to change your position, I don't want you to change your socks, I don't want you to change your undies, I want you to wear the same shirt, the same shoes, I don't want you to change your position in the team, I want you to come in exactly where you are, and the captaincy, out of the question'," FitzSimons said on Wide World of Sports'Five Minutes with Fitzy.

Steve Smith was appointed Australia's Twenty20 captain on Tuesday ahead of next month's ICC World T20 in India. "'The mental space you are in at the moment, to reel off 144 and 142 without worrying about field positions ... just stay there'."

Smith's incredible form spike, which has him averaging 62.96 in Test cricket, largely coincided with his elevation to Australian captain in 2015. Yet clearly there is no rush to change the current state of play, which has suggested that he may be even better without the burden of leadership.

FitzSimons said that Smith, eligible to regain the captaincy in March next year, seemed content with his current role and that Paine was doing a fine job as skipper. Paine, 34, had a solid start to the Ashes to ease speculation – for now – that he may soon be replaced as wicketkeeper/batsman by Alex Carey.

"Steve Smith seems to be a fairly simple soul who wants to do one, two things in life. He wants to love his wife and he wants to hit cricket balls. That's it," said FitzSimons, a former Australian Test rugby player.

Smith ‘best performer since Bradman’

Smith ‘best performer since Bradman’ Australian cricket great Adam Gilchrist says Steve Smith has gained “redemption” after being banned for 12 months for ball-tampering. Smith struck a second century in his first Test back following being banned for a year after admitting to being involved in the plot to tamper with the ball during a match against South Africa last year. "To our Australian cricket fans, we are sorry," said Sutherland. "This behaviour calls into question the Smith and his team-mates had come under heavy fire from Australian fans on social media Smith had insisted on Saturday he wouldn't resign from the captaincy but CA will be under heavy

"He made a mistake when he was the captain and he's paid for that, not to get the captaincy again. I think Tim Paine seems to be doing a hell of a job. I say, in that current set-up, you just wouldn't change anything.

"And the booing doesn't seem to bother him. And the same mob that was booing him (in the Ashes series opener at Edgbaston) also gave him a standing ovation at the end, because they were witnessing extraordinary cricket."

FitzSimons wondered it Smith might produce even greater feats as the series played out, having immediately dispelled any doubts about his ability to again dominate Test cricket.

"The most wonderful line out of that first Test was from Paul Hayward out of the London Telegraph saying that the only solace for the England team is that Steve Smith shows a certain fragility in the 140s," FitzSimons said.

"Without Steve Smith there they never would have won that first Test. It could be a release of pressure, as in, 'Whatever I get from this point on is a bonus'."

FitzSimons said that he expected Smith to be warmly received by Australian fans in the coming home summer. He said that Smith had served his time and noted an observation from Sydney Morning Herald colleague Malcolm Knox that there had been precious-little reverse swing in world cricket since the Australian's one-year ban; suggesting that ball tampering was a common practice.

"He did absolutely the wrong thing, no doubt about it," FitzSimons said.

"He saw what was going on in the corner and said something laughingly, 'I don't want to know'. He's paid his dues. He's had a year out from the game. I think he's welcome back."
