Moreland Zebras, the team from the second tier of the Victorian NPL, are through to the last eight of the FFA Cup after posting a convincing 4-0 win over Queensland club Magpies Crusaders.

The Zebras made a little piece of history with the victory as it makes them the first team from any second division of the NPL in the country to reach the quarter finals of the national knock out competition.

They have been joined by A-League clubs Melbourne City, Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets,  winners on the same evening over NPL sides Marconi, Brisbane Olympic  and Edgeworth United respectively.

Zebras coach Fausto De Amicis was forced to juggle his starting line up as a result of illness, injuries and suspensions to first team regulars.

Missing were injured Nick Symeoy, Jacob Fulluck and Davide Cardamone.

Former Adelaide United midfidler and Zebras captain Cameron Watson was absent, nursing a knock, while Nicolas Niagorian was suspended and Arnold Suew Cup-tied having played earlier in the tournament for Bentleigh Greens.

But it didn't stop De Amicis team from imposing themselves on the match early.

A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion.

He put his faith in youngsters developed in the Zebras system  - such as 17-year-old Lucien Ibanda, who made his debut earlier in the FFA Cup campaign - and they didn't let him down as they took the game to their far north Queensland opponents from the outset.

The cool conditions in Melbourne would have been a shock to the visiting team's system - they are based in Mackay - and the Zebras quickly looked to impose themselves, young forward Salvatore Accardo going close in the fourth minute with a shot that Magpies keeper Mitchell Wright blocked at his near post.

The Magpies had conceded 92 goals in their 26 league game this season - three and a half per game - so the Zebras, despite being down on manpower, were always likely to get chances.

And so it proved as the hosts took the lead in the 19th minute through 21-year old Tommy Barforosh, who was playing the central attacking role due to Nagorian's suspension.

Liam Cannell's corner was headed clear but fell to Jakob Williams, who crossed into the penalty area where Barforosh rose to head past Wright.

The Magpies - who had a penalty shout for handball ignored after an earlier shot from Michael Lyall was blocked - responded well with Lyall firing a long range drive wide.

Defender Lathan Dunn also tried his luck from distance only to see his effort fly wide of Zebras goalkeeper Fraser Chalmers post while Tremayne Sadler shot over at the other end.

But the Zebras still looked the more threatening side and they doubled the lead in the 27th minute, again through Barforosh - but there were plenty of questions to be asked about that leaky Magpies defence.

The ball was played through the midfield out to left back Shaun Timmins, who flighted a cross into the Magpies area. Borforosh was left completely unmarked and had the time to pick his spot to direct his header past Wright.

The Magpies thought they had pulled one back just before the interval when Kyren Walters headed home from a Mitchell Herrmann free kick only for the ''goal'' to be ruled out for offside.

The Queenslanders might have a leaky defence but with 42 goals in their 26 games they also do have some offensive firepower, and Walters showed that he was optimistic if nothing else with another long range strike that flew over the top just after the restart.

At the other end Sadler went close just after with a shot that shaved the post.

The hosts  put the tie to bed in the 54th minute when midfielder Gai Gai robbed Raffi Krissian and fed a pass through to Barforosh, whose run beat the Magpies offside line. The striker, who was on a hat trick, ignored the chance to grab his third and slid a pass over for Sadler to slot home into an empty net.

It all started to fall apart for the Queenslanders when Walters was sent off for a heavy challenge on Jakob Williams after the pair had clashed moments earlier, reducing the visitors to just ten men.

The Zebras were completely in control from this point and they made it four with 15 minutes remaining when Liam Cannell played a one two with Accardo before driving home from the edge of the penalty area.
