Now nine months in the clear, he is happy to find irony in his situation.

"Interestingly enough, or ironically, SunSmart have been a long term sponsor of surfing," he said.

"Last year I was laid up for the better part of 12 months as a result of a squamous cell carcinoma which is skin cancer."

Surfing WA was one of the first organisations to be sponsored by SunSmart, which is in part funded by Healthway, a West Australian Government organisation promoting healthy lifestyles.

"It makes a lot of sense because as surfers we spend inordinate amounts of time out in the sun," Mr Lane said.

"I'm one of many sporting leaders in this state that actually do have a broader concern for not only what happens within their sport, but what actually happens out in the community where we all live," he said.

Debate whether or not junk food advertising should be banned during children's television programs. Why would you need extra advertising ? It puts pictures and ideas in their minds and gets them to think that a bit of sport will compensate with what they will eat there.

Firstly, ban junk food advertising will not get a real and definitive change in the eating habits of children. Also, ban junk food advertising is not related to worry about the health of children, and we shouldn’t always support in laws or bans to be aware and more responsible with the choices in care

But he knows that is not the norm nationally.

"More recently, sports have attached themselves to alcohol brands, which is fine, that is an individual choice at the end of the day," he said.

"Sport does need sponsorship to survive."

Cutting ties with junk food

Surfing is not the only sport in WA that has cut ties with junk food and alcohol advertising.

The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) has no alcohol, junk food, or betting sponsorship involved in their organisation.

Christina Matthews, WACA CEO, said originally there were concerns this decision would limit their options and funding.

"When the opportunity first came, there was a lot of 'this will be terrible'," she said.

But in fact, their new healthy approach to advertising had the opposite effect.

"There were a lot of companies who wouldn't associate with us because of our reputation in the alcohol space," Ms Matthews said.

Jay Allen, AFL head of corporate affairs, said their partnerships helped them reinvest money into football at all levels.

"The AFL does not believe that it should be prevented from having a commercial relationship that supports the overall financial health of the game," he said.

Ms Matthews said there was less reliance on beer promotion in the cricketing world.

"The Australian team doesn't have VB or any alcohol on their playing uniform anymore and we like to think we had a bit to do with that," she said.

The healthy way

Healthway has been around for more than 30 years and has connected itself to many high-profile sporting teams, including WA's netball and soccer teams.

Tony Pignata, Perth Glory CEO, said his team was currently linked to LiveLighter, a program promoted by Healthway, which was at odds with most other A-League teams.

"We're actually the only club. Most of the League is sponsored by McDonalds, another club is sponsored by KFC, but we've chosen not to go down that route," he said.
