Danny Frawley was one of the game's most enduringly endearing characters.

Few people within the AFL community knew more people, or were more known, than 'Spud', whose death behind the wheel near Ballarat evoked a mix of disbelief and raw grief from those who knew him well.

Frawley was, as his teammate and successor as St Kilda captain Nathan Burke put it, a man of passion.

"Basically, he was passionate about everything that he did and that used to come out on and off the field," Burke said on Monday.

He was passionate about football, his three daughters, family and his friends, as his close mate, recruiter Noel Judkins, who'd gotten to know Frawley in their days at Collingwood (where Frawley was an assistant coach), put it.

Judkins, godfather to Frawley's daughter Keeley, called Frawley a "high energy'' person, who was "always on the go" and wanted to make others happy.

Frawley would advocate – fiercely – for all manner of things, critiquing coaching programs and occasionally calling to suggest story ideas to this journalist (and doubtless others).

He had hoped, for instance, that his mate Robert Harvey would land the St Kilda coaching job, to no avail.

"What's going on mate?" was how conversations with Frawley often began.

Even when he was coaching Richmond – one of the game's most parlous and pressured positions – I don't recall ever "interviewing" Spud.

You conversed, rather than interviewed him, and the conversation could take unexpected turns.

When irate Richmond fans dumped chicken manure outside Punt Rd's football office, in protest after an egregious loss to Geelong, Spud told me that he'd picked up the manure and used it for his garden, turning stereotypical Richmond supporter fury into a light-hearted matter.

But while he had that affable country way, was also more complicated than the homespun exterior suggested, which we discovered when he shared his struggles with mental health, sometime before that affliction became such a discussion point in football.

Burke observed that Frawley "wore his heart on his sleeve". This was certainly true. Frawley didn't conceal his emotions.

Frawley's career in the AFL can be divided into three distinct periods. The first, as a player at St Kilda, was notable for his leadership of a club that had seen more fun off the field than success on it.

But Spud's commitment to the cause was unwavering, the Bungaree potato farmer having commuted to training from Ballarat with Tony Lockett and Greg Burns in his early years.

The Saints of that era had the towering talent of Lockett and Nicky Winmar, with the younger guns Robert Harvey, Burke and Stewart Loewe arriving some years after Frawley, who provided the role model that those emerging stars needed, as St Kilda transitioned from the terrible '80s into the relative on-field prosperity of the '90s, when standards rose at Moorabbin.

No one captained the Saints for longer than Frawley, who presided over an improvement in St Kilda's culture, as the likes of Harvey, Burke and Loewe became exemplars of professionalism at a club that hitherto had been better known for its active social club than winning games.

"He was one of the best full-backs in the era of great full-forwards," said Burke, recalling that Frawley had successfully negated Jason Dunstall and Gary Ablett.

Frawley was an assistant for four years under Tony Shaw at Collingwood, then unexpectedly won the Richmond top job, in part because Mark Thompson turned it down to coach the Cats.

Frawley's passion endeared him to all in footy © Sharon Smith Frawley during his days coaching Richmond. Frawley's Tigers rose up to the preliminary final in his second season, in what was probably an over-achievement by a team of moderate talent.

They would fall in the subsequent seasons, mismanaging and overestimating their list, with the upshot that Frawley lost his job in 2004.

My recollection is that, as with many sacked coaches, this period was difficult for Frawley, who nonetheless, did what few coaches manage these days by coaching the Tigers for the entire season, rather than handing over to a caretaker.

Spud's third phase was in the media, where he became a fixture on radio (Triple M and then SEN) and, most notably, at Fox Footy, where he and Jason Dunstall fronted the irreverent show Bounce, in which he and the Hawthorn spearhead would joust, often in ridiculous situations outdoors.

The least successful undertaking of Frawley's was his segue to be head of the AFL Coaches' Association, a period that coincided – and, from I can recall, contributed – to his mental health issues, as found himself dealing with conflicts between coaches.

"He just liked being out and around with people," said Burke.

And, within football, so many reciprocated.
