Markus Babbel finally has his man, with the Western Sydney Wanderers poised to announce former Bundesliga star Alexander Meier as their marquee signing.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have confirmed to the Herald that Meier, 36, has agreed to join the Wanderers and is due to arrive in Sydney this weekend, although the club was unable to confirm the deal when contacted.

The veteran German striker has been a free agent since the end of last season, recently training with Major League Soccer outfit Philadelphia Union, where his former teammate Oka Nikolov is an assistant coach.

Western Sydney Wanderers have today announced the signing of Spanish attacker Álvaro Cejudo for the Hyundai A - League 2017/18 season. *Cejudo becomes the Wanderers ’ fifth and final visa signing and will land in Western Sydney later this week.

A tall, versatile forward with a strong goalscoring record, Meier has played his entire career to date in Germany and spent most of it with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he is considered a club legend, scoring 137 times in a total of 379 appearances over 14 years.

Frankfurt supporters nicknamed him 'Fussballgott', meaning 'football god'.

Babbel has searched high and low for a quality player to lead the Wanderers' attacking line and it appears Meier fits the bill nicely, with his advancing years the only concern on paper.

Meier was the Bundesliga's top scorer in 2014-15, notching 19 goals to beat Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben to the golden boot.

He returned to St Pauli, his first professional club, last season, scoring six goals in 16 games in Germany's second tier.

Babbel teased the signing in a pre-match interview before Western Sydney's 3-0 FFA Cup semi-final defeat to Melbourne City on Wednesday night - much to the surprise of club officials who were hoping to keep the news under wraps until Meier was en route to Australia.

"We were talking on Monday with him, on Tuesday we signed the contract and on Friday he’s on the plane,” Babbel said. "So I was talking to him - he comes for the right reasons and I’m very happy that he decided to come to us and I hope he can help us.

"Because this is the biggest problem - of course Sydney's a beautiful city ... but this is not the reason to come, to come is to have success with Western Sydney Wanderers and I'm very happy that we could wait so long to find him."
