WORLD RUGBY has launched an investigation into referee Jaco Peyper after he appeared to mock sent-off France star Sebastien Vahaamahina in a photo with Wales fans. The lock was shown a straight red in yesterday's thrilling quarter-final after elbowing Dragons star Aaron Wainwright.

In the picture Peyper 's elbow is raised into a fan's chin hours after he sent off Vahaamahina for elbowing Aaron Wainwright in Wales' quarter-final win. Leading France official Serge Simon said if true the photo was "shocking". World Rugby is trying to "establish the facts" surrounding the picture .

After the match, Peyper was pictured standing with a number of Wales supporters and imitating Vahaamahina’s elbow to the face. Peyper was snapped with a big grin and, while the picture might have seemed innocent to some, a number of French supporters thought it was out of line and not a good look.

French Rugby Federation vice-president Serge Simon, a former France prop, said on Twitter: "This photo if it is true is shocking and explanations will be necessary."

On Monday World Rugby confirmed it was investigating the photo  and, a day later, announced it had punted Peyper from refereeing this weekend.

“World Rugby can confirm that the match officials selection committee did not consider Jaco Peyper for selection this weekend,” a statement read.

Meanwhile, Australian referee Angus Gardner, who was an assistant in New Zealand’s quarter-final win over Ireland, has been snubbed despite being regarded as one of the best referees in the world before the tournament started.

Welsh referee Nigel Owens will take the whistle for the England-New Zealand semi-final on Saturday, and Frenchman Jerome Garces has been awarded the Wales-South Africa match on Sunday.

Romain Poite and Pascal Gauzere are the assistants for the first match, and Wayne Barnes and Ben O’Keeffe have been given the job of helping Garces in the second fixture.
