Jessica Fox riding a snow board on a body of water: Jess Fox copmetes in the Kayak slalom© Getty Jess Fox copmetes in the Kayak slalom Over-achievers are often their own harshest critics. When you consistently set the bar so high, falling a millimetre short can feel like a big loss.

Last year, Australian canoeing powerhouse Jess Fox became the most successful individual paddler in history when she surpassed her father's long-standing record of five world titles with her sixth - quickly followed by a seventh.

But in her own words, Fox's 2019 "wasn't as perfect" as the year before.

Despite hauling in three gold medals, three silvers and three bronze, defending her overall World Cup title and securing early qualification for the Tokyo Olympics, it was difficult for the 25-year-old to view her achievements in isolation from her history-making year.

Having now secured a ticket to her third Olympic Games, Fox revealed she had taken time to appropriately celebrate her accomplishments in light of undergoing a long-needed surgery to fix a deviated septum ahead of the season, which pushed her preparation six weeks behind schedule.

"The inside of my nose was quite deviated, so I couldn't really breathe well," Fox revealed to Wide World of Sports.

"It's something that I've had to do for a few years and never really got to. It was never a priority kind of thing. I was still able to function, and it wasn't life threatening.

"But it's kind of something now as an athlete you look at the one-percenters as well and being able to breathe well through your nose is quite important. It's important in terms of good sleep and good recovery and trying different relaxation methods, and that was all linked to my nose in that way as well.

This will be a fantastic folk party with activities for the whole family, music, dining and of course lots of good entertainment in the ski track and the slopes.

"I had to have six weeks off to recover from that surgery and that was a lot longer than I had ever had off. So that meant my preparation was different compared to other years. I was a bit apprehensive to know how that might affect me."

Returning from surgery and having tested out a variety of new kayak and canoe models, securing her spot for Tokyo 2020 was Fox's focus.

The 2020 Games will mark the first time the canoe event will feature in Olympic competition alongside kayak and in pursuit of her first Olympic gold (Fox already holds an Olympic bronze and silver), bagging the double in both the C1 and K1 would be the Australian's "dream come true".

"I had the best year in 2018 and I knew this year would be a lot harder to back up," she told Wide World of Sports.

"This season wasn't as perfect but now that I've had a little bit of time to reflect on it, I'm extremely happy with the season because I achieved the main goal, which was to qualify for Tokyo.

"Yes, I didn't get to defend my world title, but I won my spot for a third Olympic Games and that felt like gold.

"I'll be competing in two events at the Olympics, so it'll be important to prepare for that well and manage that load at the Games. I'm doing everything I can to get to Tokyo in the best shape and headspace; physically, technically as good as I can, so I can challenge for that gold medal.

"It would be a dream come true. But it's important to stick to the process and not get carried away with those big predictions and big dreams. In our sport, it can be three-seconds between first and second or 0.3 of a second.

"So, I just need to go one step at a time. But obviously to be able to do that would be historic and monumental."

Traditionally a male event, the canoe slalom was introduced to the women's field in 2010.

Fox, a teen at the time, began training for her second discipline but lacked the strength to paddle in the orthodox one-sided style. So, she pioneered her own.

Switching her arms as she felt comfortable on the paddle, Fox was at first chastised for breaking convention.

Initially labelled a 'cheater' and judged by peers, Fox's style is now a hugely popular technique on the circuit and is even being employed by some men.

"For me as a younger athlete, I wasn't strong enough or confident enough in my shoulders, I didn't want to injure myself," she said.

"Because I came from a kayak background it was natural for me to change sides, so that was the technique I adopted.

"It wasn't seen as the right technique at the time. For me, it was what worked best. So, I just ran with it and owned it, so all the girls now mostly paddle like that and some of the men are now open-minded about leaving tradition behind and going with what is faster or more efficient.

"I wasn't fazed by trying to conform to the traditional male technique and encouraging other girls to do it and own it, and not have to think about the what the coaches are saying to do.

"It's cool because other athletes would look at us and say, 'You're doing it wrong' or, 'You're not doing it the proper way' - but is there a proper way? We're doing it our style, we're new here too. 'That's cheating' ... 'That's not how you do it' ... but you just let the results speak for themselves."
