Boxing legend Jeff Fenech has revealed more details about the miracle recovery from heart surgery in Thailand that allowed him to return to Australia for his daughter's wedding.

Fenech made a shock return to Sydney to walk daughter Jessica down the aisle on her big day at St Mary's Cathedral last weekend, defying his doctor's predictions of a five week stay in hospital.

Australia's greatest boxer was in Bangkok for a training camp with Jack Brubaker and Brock Jarvis when he fell ill, with doctors saying he would have died if he wasn't rushed to hospital when he was.

Initially diagnosed with an infection, Fenech required emergency surgery to replace a valve in his heart.

He was heartbroken when told there was little chance he'd be able to attend Jess' wedding, but the Marrickville Mauler was determined to prove the medical experts wrong.

And he leaned on the training from his boxing days to get him through.

"The first few days (after the surgery), I couldn't walk and they had to hold me up," Fenech told Ben Damon on the Main Event Boxing Podcast.

"I was thinking I'd forgotten how to walk.

"After two days of them helping me and walking me through (the hospital), I thought the only way they're going to let me go home is to show them I can walk.

"Every day I was walking three or four km. There was a 400m corridor and they'd all be waving to me. Then they started taking me to the gym and putting the elevation and speed up.

"As much as I was getting tired, they'd give me a chart and I'd say 'nothing, I don't feel anything' and I think that's the only reason they let me on a plane to go home, because I passed those tests with flying colours.

"And although I passed them...I cheated."

After just 10 days, Fenech was on a plane back to Australia with a Thai doctor along in case of an emergency.

The 55-year-old stayed in hospital in Sydney for several days, but is now back home.

But he's not out of the woods yet.

"Very far from it. I've got at least another 30-odd days of having this drip that I carry to give me antibiotics," he said.

"My heartbeat's still not regular and I have to go get my kidneys checked.

"I"m going to have my brain scanned and do everything I can to make sure I'm the best person I can."
