Fox Sports' chief NRL reporter James Hooper reports the Rabbitohs are eyeing Frizell as a possible replacement capable of bringing the experience and leadership needed should Burgess call time on his NRL career.

Despite being contracted until the end of 2020, Frizell's future remains clouded after a 2019 campaign that's seen the Dragons star linked to a number of teams including the Roosters and Eels.

The future of Sam Burgess is expected to be announced this week with a Rabbitohs board meeting set to take place regarding the possibility of a medical retirement due to on-going shoulder issues.

Any attempts to land the Dragons star won't be easy with Burgess reportedly contracted on a deal worth over $1 million a year until the end of 2022.

Burgess' contract will be a difficult battle to resolve as it remains unclear as to how much of the contract will be included in South Sydney's cap for the next three years.

Frizell has established himself as one of the game's most impactful second-rowers with a resume boasting NSW and Australian representative honours.

Since debuting at the Sharks, 28-year old Frizell has played a total of 157 first grade games.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg says it would be a pity if South Sydney captain Sam Burgess is forced to retire through injury.

Last month the two butted heads over dissonance with the NRL's judiciary, but with his career in jeopardy after 182 NRL games, Greenberg has said Burgess' sudden retirement would be a shame.

"He's been an ornament to the NRL in the way that he carries himself on the field," Greenberg said while announcing the 2020 NRL draw on Tuesday.

"I know he's got himself into some trouble occasionally with judiciary and match reviews, but he's the sort of player people want to watch.

"He's the sort of player I like to watch. I find him an unbelievable competitor on the field so I hope to see him back. I don't know what his future holds but I hope he's back playing rugby league again next year.

"He's been a great competitor in our game, he's one of the best. And if he finishes because of an injury, that would be a real shame. I hope that isn't the case and I hope he can come back from this."
