The Phoenix Suns have raced out of the gates this season, with an impressive string of performances to get them off to their best start since 2004.

After six games, Aron Baynes has perhaps been one of the biggest surprises of the young season, taking advantage of his opportunity in the starting lineup, following starting center Deandre Ayton's 25-game suspension for testing positive for a diuretic.

Baynes is playing some of the best basketball of his career, averaging 17.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.0 block per game since being inserted into the starting lineup. He's also been incredibly efficient, shooting 56.9 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc on 5.0 attempts per game.

With 24 points against the Golden State Warriors and 20 against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Aussie recorded back-to-back 20-point games for the first time in his career. While it's still a small sample size, there's a lot to like early on from Baynes and the new-look Suns.

Head coach Monty Williams deserves a ton of credit for moulding Phoenix's identity this early in the season. The Suns are going to play hard defence on one end and move the ball at the other - and the early returns show exactly that.

Aussie giant crushes NBA star's hand in fall The Golden State Warriors' season from hell has gone from bad to worse with Stephen Curry breaking his left hand in a fall. The incident occurred in the third quarter of the Phoenix Suns' clash with the Warriors, when Baynes attempted to take a charge on Curry as the guard drove to the basket.

He traded for Dario Saric, Aron Baynes and Jevon Carter, drafted Cam Johnson and Ty Jerome, signed undrafted rookie The Suns didn’t take advantage of having Richaun Holmes – who played the four with Joel Embiid in Philadelphia prior to his stint in Phoenix – and Ayton on the floor together.

The Suns currently lead the league in assist percentage, with 68.8 percent of their baskets being assisted, with Williams helping lighten the offensive burden on rising star Devin Booker. Baynes is also benefitting from Williams' preference to have his big men act as playmakers, averaging a career-high 3.2 assists per game.

He’s creating 8.3 points per game for his teammates with those assists, tying him with Joel Embiid for the seventh-highest mark among centers.

The Suns' ball movement is no doubt opening up a lot more open looks, but Booker credits Baynes' physicality on the offensive end for helping free up the perimeter as well.

"Getting through his [Baynes] screens also," Booker said of their offensive improvement. "He probably won't say that himself, but I've watched the film and he's getting some good hits on them guards and I've played against him before so I know how that goes.

While the offence has been revamped, the most dramatic improvement for the Suns has come on the defensive end, thanks largely to the additions of Baynes and Ricky Rubio in the off-season.

Rubio ranks fifth in the league in steals , averaging 2.2 per game. While Baynes isn't necessarily a shot-blocking machine, his ability to anchor a defence and alter shots with his presence in the paint is a big reason why the Suns currently have the league's seventh-best defensive rating at 100.5 .

In a loaded Western Conference, that features some of the best big men in the league, Baynes' presence to combat the likes of Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Davis, Nikola Jokic and co. will give Suns fans plenty of confidence that they can continue competing with the league's best teams.

Many predicted the Suns wouldn't improve much on their 19-win season in 2018-19, but with the development of Kelly Oubre Jr. and the offensive output from Booker, the Suns are finding a nice balance between their young talent and the veteran additions, with Booker praising the calming influence of Rubio and Baynes, who have set the standard for the youngest roster in the league.

“Those are winners man, and it shows why,” Booker said of Rubio and Baynes via The Athletic . “Every day counts. Every possession counts. You see the different mentality of people that have been there. They stress the importance of details and coming down to the stretch, [during] winning time and when it matters that you have to lock in.

“Beginning through end, you’re hearing their voice, and it’s all the right things.”

Baynes' only season as a regular starter came in Boston in 2017-18, where he averaged 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds on 47.4 percent shooting from the field in 18.3 minutes, starting 67 games for the Celtics. After spending the majority of his career as a backup big, the Aussie is showing he has what it takes on both ends as a starting center, relishing the opportunity to contribute on a nightly basis and put his experience to good use for his new team.

"After one phone call I was excited to come down here," Baynes said of his off-season trade to the Suns.

"Talking to James [Jones] and Monty [Williams] and just understanding that it was a new system, new coaches, new players. I wanted to come in here and try and impart some of what I’ve learned along the way.

"It’s been a good learning experience, but at the same time we’re excited because we’ve got so much room for improvement as well. It’s good to go out there and get these early wins, but the amount of improvement we’ve shown game-to-game, we’re going to keep getting better."
