  McLaughlin tests new Mustang pre-Sandown Supercars star Scott McLaughlin has warmed up for this weekend's Sandown 500 with a shakedown of his newly-built Ford Mustang.The DJR Team Penske star will race a completely new car at the Melbourne event after wrecking his old Mustang in a scary crash at Surfers Paradise last month.

Kiwi motorsport legend Greg Murphy believes it's time Scott McLaughlin quit the Australian Supercar Series.

A ninth-placed finish at the Sandown 500 on Sunday was enough to claim back-to-back championship titles for McLaughlin.       

But instead of celebrating, he labelled his rivals "toxic" after a war of words erupted post race.

After such animosity, Kiwi motorsport legend Greg Murphy believes it's time McLaughlin left Supercars in his dust.   

"I have no doubt that he is looking further afield and so he should be," Murphy told Newshub. "Outside Supercars."  

Whether that decision is made after the final race of the season in two weeks time remains to be seen. Either way, the 26-year-old will have the chance to celebrate yet another championship.

Recent crashes involving Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin and Totoya 86 driver John Iafolla have raised safety concerns before the season's Newcastle finale.John Iafolla was lucky to walk away when his car flipped multiple times and landed on a ute and resulted in the Toyota 86 race at Sandown 10 days ago being abandoned.
