A Nova radio host has been left with a suspected broken rib after a boxing stunt went horribly wrong, with Paul Gallen delivering a devastating blow in a 30-second sparring session.

In a video released by Fitzy & Wippa's Facebook page, the former Sharks skipper is seen dropping Nova newsreader Matt de Groot with a commanding kidney shot.

De Groot, who is almost the identical height to Barry Hall and represents a similar physique to the retired AFL superstar, was blind-folded and brought into a boxing gym for a surprise '30 seconds in the ring challenge' with Gallen.

In a stunt gone horribly wrong, de Groot, who has boxing experience, having previously trained for a charity fight, revealed to Wide World of Sports just how powerful the G-train really is.

Former heavyweight champ challenges Gal

Former heavyweight champ challenges Gal Lucas Browne has sensationally challenged Paul Gallen to a fight should he emerge victorious in Friday's code-war bout with Swans great Barry Hall.Hot off dismantling Former NRL bad boy John Hopoate in a brutal second round stoppage over the weekend, Browne has set his sights on the Cronulla legend who he initially chastised for being an imposter in the fight scene.

It represents a warning to Hall less than a week before he gets into the ring with Gallen this Friday night.

After clarifying that he had asked Gallen to box to his optimum and not "dance around", de Groot revealed that he got more than he bargained for despite having a deep respect for Gallen's boxing prowess.

"Once I knew the fight was happening, I said to Gallen before the fight, 'give it a go, I don't want you to dance around the ring and slightly tap me,'" de Groot said.

"He laughed and said, 'okay.'

"It's just clubbing blows. When he swings, you can see he's just going for the core and not my head because he probably would've killed me. You feel like you've been hit by a bat.

"They come quicker than you would imagine. One second he's a couple feet away and next minute he's raced up inside of you and gone bang-bang-bang.

"The hit which he knocked me down, it felt like a bat to the ribs. It was brutal and all of his punches are just heavy."

Gallen: The truth about me trashing Barry

Gallen: The truth about me trashing Barry EXCLUSIVE: It's been called trash talk. Really, it's not. Everything I've said about Barry Hall has been 100 per cent true.I haven't said anything about Barry Hall that I don't believe is 100 per cent true.

Gallen's devastating blow proved to be too much for the radio host who knew immediately after that something wasn't right. De Groot is yet to find out the results of the scans but a broken rib is a likely result. "This one felt different from the moment he hit it," de Groot said.

"As soon as it connected, I immediately thought 'that is unlike any hit I've ever taken in my life.'

"It's got all the symptoms of a broken rib. It hurts to cough, it hurts to laugh and it hurts to move."

De Groot's assessment that the Gallen blow was "unlike any hit I've ever taken in my life" carries more weight than if it came from most novices, given the radio star's previous boxing training.

When training for the charity fight he boxed in, de Groot entered a brutal school designed to toughen him up before he got in the ring for real.

"I did a charity fight a couple of years ago where you get trained for 12 weeks and fight someone who hasn't fought before," he said.

"In training for that, I did a lot of sparring with a mixed martial artist.

"His concept of training was, 'If I hit you harder than you will ever be hit when you get in the ring, it will all feel quite soft.'

"So, we did a lot of brutal sparring and exercises where he stood alongside me and belted me.

"The purpose was to give an idea of how much the body could take before being knocked down.

"That's why I was comfortable doing it, because I had done a lot of sparring with this MMA guy.

"Unfortunately, no amount of preparation in that sort of training could prepare me for what Gallen had to offer."
