There is also much at stake for Australia's Mack Horton. In a darkened courtyard, Sun stood over a locked box containing blood that had been drawn from his arm earlier that night. Using the torch app on his phone he lit the scene while a security guard at his residential compound wielded a hammer to break open the box and retrieve the glass vials inside.

Sun was referring to a Sunday Telegraph exposé in which FINA's report into how Sun smashed his blood vials with a hammer was published in its entirety.

FINA gave Sun a warning over the incident, but the swimming governing body's decision was appealed to the CAS by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The CAS is sport's highest authority and could end Sun's career.

Yet Sun is bullish about his future and said during his hearing that he intends to swim at Tokyo 2020 and beat Aussie star Horton. Sun is a triple Olympic gold medallist, yet Horton beat him in the Rio 2016 400m freestyle after calling his Chinese rival a "drugs cheat".
