Latrell Mitchell: Star would need to change body to play fullback at Wests Tigers - Daley

Latrell Mitchell: Star would need to change body to play fullback at Wests Tigers - Daley Roosters superstar back Latrell Mitchell appears set for a big-money move, with Wests Tigers reportedly in the box seat, though the move is likely to come with a positional switch.Having played in the centres for the majority of his stunning ascent into one of the game's most exciting players, the 22-year-old is expected to switch to fullback if he does head to Concord.

Latrell Mitchell can make a successful transition to fullback if he puts his mind to it, according to NSW State of Origin coach Brad Fittler. Mitchell's playing future has been the talk of the NRL summer after being photographed on Monday night meeting North Queensland officials.

Melbourne Storm legend Billy Slater has thrown his support behind Latrell Mitchell, declaring he believes the disgruntled star can successfully transition from centre to fullback.

The Tigers are heavily favoured to sign the 22-year old Rooster on a multi-year deal with the prospect of taking over the fullback reigns as the club continues it search for a long-term fix, following the departure of James Tedesco two years ago.

Mitchell protects local farm from NSW bushfires Latrell Mitchell has taken time away from ongoing speculation surrounding his NRL future to join the firefighting effort. After the Roosters rescinded their $800,000-a-season offer to the young centre over a week ago, Mitchell returned to his hometown of Taree where he remains poised for a move to the Wests Tigers.

A desire to play fullback is part of Latrell Mitchell’s willingness to explore other NRL opportunities, according to Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson. Mitchell is likely to have played his final game for the club after Robinson conceded the Roosters needed to “move on” from their star centre.

Mitchell has one year remaining on his current deal, but it's expected the Roosters will allow him to leave should they be financially compensated.

Tigers officials and coach Michael Maguire met with Mitchell last week and pitched their vision in hopes of putting pen to paper.

But it's the backing of NRL great Billy Slater whose career spanned 323 first grade games and 31 appearances for Queensland that should have Tigers fans excited if Latrell can stay focused.

"Latrell is the only one that would make it an unsuccessful transition," Slater told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"At his best, he is a good fit for any club because he's one of the best players in the competition

"The (biggest challenge) is probably his aerobic capacity. To play a position like fullback you have to be in the game all the time – your team relies on you to be everywhere.

"Latrell obviously sees that as a challenge. That hasn't been a strength in the early part of his career, he has drifted in and out of games, but when you look at the big games, he tends to stand up in those.

Slater also pointed out how crucial it is for Latrell to handle the extra pressure and the media microscope which comes with playing in the No. 1 jersey.

"The tough thing for Latrell is he is under the microscope already. The (media coverage) around him is crazy. If he changes positions, it's going to be magnified.

"We're in the off-season and Latrell is in contract negotiations and it seems to be negative for him. That's sad for the young man, he goes through a fair bit, more than most players.

"He just needs to find his happiness. If he is happy, everything will take care of itself."
