Holmes sensationally quit the NRL to pursue his dream of playing American football in November last year.

He would eventually fail to make the 53-man squad, signing a one-year deal with the Jets practice squad as part of the NFL's international pathways program.

Since the start of the NFL season, rumours have persisted that the 24-year-old was planning a return to rugby league in 2020, with the North Queensland Cowboys the front-runners in the race for his signature.

These speculations have been confirmed by the Jets, revealing that he has been released from their squad to pursue a contract in the NRL.

Valentine Holmes is staying in America despite huge interest fro, NRL clubs.

"We have released Valentine Holmes from the practice squad," the club said via Twitter

"The Australia native is eying a return to the National Rugby League."

In a statement on the club's website, Holmes thanked the Jets for the opportunity and experience.

"Yeah, it's been awesome," he said.

"I'm excited I got to play in all four games and I'm very grateful the Jets gave me that opportunity.

"I'm happy with how much time I got, whether it was a couple of minutes or 10 minutes or whatever.

"I'm just very grateful to be here."
