Cronulla have given themselves the inside track to nab the next Fijian flyer by joining forces with the Kaiviti Silktails in the Ron Massey Cup.

The third tier footy competition will host the Silktails in 2020, with the Sharks providing access to elite-level coaching, training facilities and support services.

Kaiviti means someone from Fiji while the Silktails are a bird native to the country.

The Silktails’ pitch to join the Ron Massey Cup – and, eventually, Canterbury Cup – has been supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), providing a funding deal for the next four years and has also backed a move to play NRL pre-season trial matches in the Pacific for the next three years.

According to team ambassador Petero Civoniceva, the players will live in Nadi during pre-season to get familiar with elite systems and processes.

“The players have the natural talent to succeed, it will be how they apply themselves to a new training regime that will prepare them to take the next step,” Civoniceva told the Silktails’ website.

“The Ron Massey Cup is our focus right now and coach Brandon Costin will have them prepared.”

In October, before the PM’s XIII match, the agreement with Fiji National Rugby League was signed, with Cronulla’s involvement announced Wednesday at a press conference.

The Silktails aren't without a template, with the PNG Hunters - and the progression of Storm centre Justin Olam from fringe Inrust Super Cup player to NRL regular - proving how a team in the elite NRL pathways can pay dividends.

"Everyone sees what that change has done for rugby league in PNG, to play that Hunters side in the Q-Cup," Fiji and Penrith second-rower Viliame Kikau said.

"Back home, everything is rugby union.

"Fiji Rugby League is working hard to make rugby league big in Fiji as well.

"Getting that into Ron Massey will be massive for us."

While details are still emerging over how the partnership will play out, Cronulla's logo will appear on the Kaviti home and away strip

Fiji is an emerging powerhouse on the international stage, with the Bati's 44-18 Oceania Cup victory over Samoa earlier this month underlining their rise up the international rankings to currently sit fifth -ahead of Samoa and PNG.

Western Suburbs Magpies will not be participating in the RMC in 2020, though will field a Canterbury Cup side.
