To the surprise of no one, the Gold Coast Suns have selected Oakleigh Chargers midfielder Matt Rowell with the first pick in the 2019 AFL Draft.

Rowell has been touted as the number one player in this draft class for several months and was earmarked for the Suns a long way out from Wednesday night.

Elite both in and out of the contest, the 180cm, 78kg inside midfielder finds the footy and uses it well with regularity.

If there were any doubt about him going number one, his consistency across 2019 put them all to bed, averaging 25 disposals across the U18 championships.

Rowell put the cherry on top of a stellar season with a 44-touch, two-goal best-on-ground performance in Oakleigh's NAB League grand final win over Eastern Ranges.

“It’s pure joy and excitement with what this opportunity brings,” Rowell said after getting made top pick in the 2019 draft.

“They (the Suns) have been really positive throughout the whole year. I think they’ve got a great group of players up there and good people. I think it’ll be great place to play footy and live.”

Having been awarded a priority pick at the top of the draft, Gold Coast seemingly hit the jackpot this year, with fellow Chargers gun Noah Anderson just so happening to be best mates with Rowell.

Again, it was no surprise to hear Anderson's name read out at number two after the big-bodied Vic Metro captain impressed over the past few seasons.

Meanwhile, with the third selection, the Melbourne Demons chose to buck the trend and take ruckman Luke Jackson, who has been compared to Collingwood's Brodie Grundy for his ground ball work and outstanding vertical leap.

As they were expected to, the GWS Giants selected Vic Country defender Lachlan Ash with the fourth pick, with the 18-year-old possessing a strong run and outstanding kick, and admitting to modelling his game of his now teammate Lachie Whitfield.

With the fifth pick, the Sydney Swans elected to take outside midfielder Dylan Stephens, with the South Australian possessing versatility in the middle of the field and a similar playing style to West Coast's Andrew Gaff. Whilst he was projected to land within the top 10 picks, Stephens is considered a bolter at pick five.
