Latifi finished runner-up in this season's F2 championship, and has already taken part in six practice sessions for Williams.

The 24-year-old Canadian will partner George Russell at the Grove team, who have struggled at the back of the field in 2019.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the team this year, supporting them with the development of the car, and assisting wherever I can trackside and at the factory," Latifi said.

"I look forward to the journey ahead with the team, and I am excited to make my Formula 1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix in 2020."

Ferrari drivers 2020 . With Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc tied down to long-term deals, it appears there will be an unchanged line- up at the Scuderia for the 2020 season. The only (unlikely) twist could be Vettel announcing his retirement at the end of the year.

So, who’s confirmed to drive for 2020 , and which drivers could switch teams? Nico Hulkenberg’s contract at Renault is up for renewal at the end of the season and there are a number of drivers who could take his place if the 31-year-old and the Anglo-French team do not extend his stay.

Deputy team principal Claire Williams says Latifi is a strong addition to the team.

"All of us at Williams have been immensely impressed at what he has achieved this year in FIA Formula 2, along with his commitment to the team, and the work that he has put in behind the scenes," said Williams.

"Nicholas has become an established and well-respected member of Williams, and we look forward to him stepping up into this new role, as we look to fight our way back to the midfield."

Latifi's promotion had been expected since Kubica announced in September that he would be leaving the team after a difficult year.

Kubica, who was tipped as a future world champion when he came into F1 in 2006, returned to racing in 2019 for the first time since a near-fatal rally crash in early 2011, but was unable to match Russell's pace.

Kubica is in line to take a development and test driver role with Haas for 2020.

Confirmation that Latifi will take the Williams drive means Daniel Ricciardo's Renault teammate Nico Hulkenberg is definitely without a seat for 2020, bringing an end to his 178 race career, at least temporarily.

Hulkenberg holds the unwanted record of having driven the most F1 races without ever appearing on the podium.
