Australian coach Justin Langer has labeled Ian Chappell's 'white-anting' comment about Steve Smith 'strange', and implored captain Tim Paine to continue to lean on the expertise of Smith and other senior players this summer.

Chappell's publically declared he was bemused when he saw Smith getting involved in fielding positions during the Aussies' second test win over Pakistan in Adelaide.

The former Australian skipper described Smith's actions as 'white-anting', saying it's something he hates to see.

Ian Chappell expressed his displeasure after Steve Smith continued to fiddle with the position of a fielder which was initially set by Paine . Former Australia cricketer Ian Chappell accused Steve Smith of ‘ white - anting ’ (Australian colloquial term for undermining) and claimed the star batsman

“I tell you what I don’t like to see, Steve Smith is moving a few fieldsmen around,” Chappell told Macquarie Sports Radio.

“He did have a chat with Tim Paine, trying to talk Tim Paine into moving a fielder on the off-side, but I’m not sure Tim Paine moved him as far as Steve Smith wanted.

"Steve Smith started moving him, I hate to see that.

“England used to do it a bit, blokes other than the captain and I always felt it was white-anting the captain.”

And they were comments that Langer felt were out of line, as he encourages senior players to play like leaders on the field at all times.

“I thought that was a really strange comment the other day,” Langer said in Perth ahead of the first Test against New Zealand on Thursday.

“It would be absolutely ridiculous of Tim Paine not to be looking like all captains do, and having a talk to Steve Smith, who has been a former captain of Australia, and David Warner and Travis Head, who is a captain of South Australia and a vice-captain, and a group of senior bowlers.

“He’d be crazy. We want to encourage all our guys to think like captains and leaders on and off the field.

“So it’d be ridiculous for Painey not to be asking for it and then channelling the information as is required to whoever needs it.

“I was actually pleased to see our guys having a leadership impact on the ground.”

Smith's captaincy ban from the 2018 ball-tampering saga expires in March next year, and following his incredible return to Test cricket in this year's Ashes, calls for him to be reinstated have grown louder.

It's spurned a widespread debate, as Paine continues to lead a resurgent Australian side who held onto the Ashes and skittled Pakistan last week in a series sweep.

However, Chappell's accusing Smith of 'white-anting' his skipper have added further intrigue to the discussion.

Following the win over Pakistan in Adelaide last week, Smith was made aware of Chappell's comments, and downplayed suggestions he was undermining Paine.

“I only try to help Tim as much as I can,” Smith told Channel 9.

“He’s doing a terrific job. I give him suggestions and things like that.

“I only want the team to do well, I’m certainly not undermining him.”
