The 41-year-old Los Angeles Lakers guard and five-time National Basketball Association (NBA) champion was reportedly travelling with four other people in his private helicopter when it crashed in Calabasas, about 65 kilometres north-west of Los Angeles.US sports network ESPN is among multiple US media outlets that is reporting the 41-year-old's death.The Los Angeles County Sheriff said on Twitter that five people died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas and that there were no survivors.

Tiger Woods has given a moving tribute to his good friend Kobe Bryant moments after learning the Los Angeles Lakers legend had died in a helicopter crash.

Woods was told of the sad news by his caddie, Joe LaCava, moments after walking off the 18th green at the end of his final round at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Tiger finished two under for the round and nine under for the week, but golf scores and results suddenly became irrelevant when he learned of the tragic passing of an NBA legend.

"I didn't really understand why the people in the galleries were saying 'do it for Mamba.'

"Now I understand. It's a shocker to everyone.

"Unbelievably sad and one of the more tragic days that...well, for me, the reality is just kind'va setting in because I was just told probably about five minutes ago.

"He burned so competitively hot. And the desire to win - he bought it each and every night on both ends of the floor.

"Not too many guys can say that throughout NBA history, that he'd lock up on D, obviously he was dominant on the offensive side, and any time he was in the game, he'd take on their best player and shut em down for all 48 minutes.

"That was one of the more impressive things."

Speaking to media later, Woods spoke more about Bryant's relentless drive in the gym during the offseason.

"We were always working out together. I'd get up early, he'd get up early and we'd work out," he said.

"He liked and enjoyed the retired life, but he missed being competitive, being on court, but it was his time.

"We really connected more on the mental side of it, the prep and how much it takes to be prepared.

"The amount of hours that he spent in the gym in the off-season to work on shots and do all the different things that look like they came natural to him on the court during game time.

"He spent more hours looking at film and trying to figure out how to become better, and that's where he and I really connected.

"We're very similar. He came into the league and I turned pro round about the same time. We had our 20-year run together.

"It's shocking."
