The NBA has announced a new format for this year's All-Star gram in the hopes of increasing the level of competition throughout the game.

The new format will also honour the late Kobe Bryant who won a record-tying four NBA All-Star Game MVP awards.

Team Giannis and Team LeBron will compete to win each of the first three quarters, all of which will start with the score at 0-0 and each quarter will be 12 minutes long. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the game clock will be turned off and a Final Target Score will be set.

The Final Target Score is determined by taking the leading team's total cumulative score through three quarters and adding 24 points - the 24 to represent Bryant's jersey number. The teams will then play the untimed final quarter with the first team to reach the Final Target Score winning the NBA All-Star Game.

Kobe's 'heroic' final act before fatal crash .
Kobe Bryant was helping the daughter of one of his fellow helicopter crash victims in the minutes before he died. Los Angeles Lakers GM Rob Pelinka, one of Bryant's best friends, revealed that the NBA legend was texting him during the ill-fated chopper flight last month. Shortly before Bryant (41), his daughter Gianna (13) and seven other people died, he called on Pelinka to help him with a favour. He wanted to help a young girl, the daughter of crash victim John Altobelli, secure a potentially life-changing sports internship.
