  Giants outlast Suns in rainy AFLW opener Greater Western Sydney have held on to claim a one-point win over Gold Coast in the Suns' first AFLW match.In weather more reminiscent of the middle of winter, the Giants slogged out a 1.3 (9) to 1.2 (8) victory on Saturday afternoon at Blacktown International Sportspark.

The Brisbane Lions have upset defending AFLW champions Adelaide by 13 points in their season opener despite a record-breaking effort by Anne Hatchard. Hatchard nabbed the record for most touches in an AFLW clash, eclipsing Crows teammate Ebony Marinoff's 33 disposal effort last season.

In round one, Geelong were obliterated 48-13 in the inside-50 count by Fremantle and lost the match by 16 points.

The Lions were not seriously challenged in the final term.

It was the first time a Brisbane team had won an AFL or AFLW match at Geelong's home ground since their last men's premiership season in 2003.
