Wayne Bennett is expected to continue his legendary coaching career beyond his current contract after South Sydney revealed the 70-year-old will step aside at the end of the 2021 NRL season.

Under the club’s succession plan, Bennett will see out the remaining two seasons of his deal before handing the reins to Demetriou.

Bennett has reportedly signed off on the arrangement but did not publicly comment when the news broke on Friday.

It is understood the ex-Canberra, Brisbane, St George Illawarra and Newcastle coach has no plans to retire.

And the seven-time premiership-winning mentor, who began his first-grade coaching career at the Raiders in 1987, seemingly has options.

Representatives of three potential NRL expansion clubs – the Brisbane Bombers, Ipswich Jets and Redcliffe Dolphins - all told Fairfax Media on Friday they would consider hiring Bennett if they are granted entry into an expanded competition.

Meanwhile, a second-string Rabbitohs side defeated Parramatta 28-24 in a pre-season trial at Ringrose Park on Friday night.
