You know, the 19-year-old Cronulla flyer who was purported to be the fastest man in rugby league before it was suddenly revealed on Tuesday that he had an A sample that tested positive to a bewildering array of performance-enhancing steroids. If you look up "exogenous testosterone", "androsterone", "etiocholanoloneand 5b-androstane-3a", "17b-diol" in your thesaurus, before taking those substances, it will say: "You really don't need to know this. Stop being a drug cheat."

In " Death Wish " (1974), Kersey (played by Charles Bronson ) is an architect. Ben: People rely on the police to keep them safe. That's the problem. The police only arrive after the crime has taken place.

In response to the news, I offer one plea, more questions than I have answers for, and one exhortation.

Firstly, and most importantly, let's hope the NRL and Cronulla are taking steps to make sure the young man is OK and being looked after. The result of his B sample is yet to be confirmed and he has not provided any explanation as to how they have been detected in his system. Most incidents of this nature are pinned to the foreheads of mature athletes who have been around the block for a few years, many of them married. Most of them have seen enough of the world, and been knocked around enough by it, that they have a certain resilience when so caught.

That is not the case here. I repeat: Xerri is just 19! To be so new to the game, still so young and potentially facing the worst drugs charge in NRL history - at least that we know of - brings an extraordinary pressure to bear. And while the old league diktat applied to very young players that "if you're good enough, you're old enough" certainly applies to matters on the field, it may well be something else entirely for extreme matters off the field. How many of us could face the ignominy of the allegations he now faces, even in our mature years?

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority has come under fire for taking six months to notify Bronson Xerri he had tested positive to performance-enhancing drugs .

The point should be made to him that while it is your youth that makes you most vulnerable to complete collapse here - and we are aware of that and are here for you - bear in mind that it is also your very youth that is your best plea for mitigating circumstances if you are found guilty of being a drug cheat. At your age most of those who will sit in judgment of you, didn't know which way was up either, so if you have made a colossal error of judgment, and you come clean, express deep remorse and point to your youth, there has to be a little chance some leniency will be shown.

But here are the questions.

The first and most obvious is WTF?

How on earth is a bloke tested in November and the results only come back the following May?

On a Saturday in September in 1988, Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson won the 100-metre sprint at the Seoul Olympics. A urine sample was taken after the race, tested positive and he had handed the medal back by the Monday, two days later!

NRL superstar Bronson Xerri fought back tears after he was told he had failed a drug test that has left his career in tatters.

Here we are, three decades later, and it takes six months? WHY?

And if you are going to release it at an arbitrary date later, why right now?

If you had to have the NRL wise heads put their noggins together and come up with the singularly most damaging date this year to - as we delight in saying in the trade - drop the bombshell, wouldn't they come up with a date just two days before the comp starts again?

Figuratively, you had Peter V'landys out the front, waxing lyrical as ever, about how the public need have no fear about resting public health on a pillar of trust for the NRL, "Because our players will be following all the rules and regulations, just like they always have. They're safe as houses, I tell you, there is no risk they will do the wrong thing and ...

Reporter: "What are all those sirens going off behind you? All those flashes?"

V'landys: "Yes, well. It just may be that one of our players hasn't done quite the right thing, and ..."

And you get the drift.

Right when the NRL most needs headlines about football only, they get the most damaging drug allegations in years.

The next question can only be asked if (and that's a big if at this early stage) Xerri's B sample tests positive, intentional use is proven and he does indeed decide to throw himself on the mercy of the court. The question is, Bronson, WTF were you thinking?

"To lose one parent, Mr Worthing," Oscar Wilde once famously wrote in The Importance of Being Earnest, "may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness."

But four lots of illegal drugs? That is neither misfortune, nor carelessness. And that has moved so far beyond the usual cat-ate-my-homework-and-cough-medicines-are-a-real-danger-these-days kind of excuses most drug cheats offer that it can be described as nothing less than death-wish drug taking. If proven, it is dangerous on every level, not least your health, but most certainly starting with the likelihood of being caught.

Which leads to my exhortation to the NRL.

A 29-year-old player just might have the wherewithal to organise those kind of drugs, entirely independently. But not a 19-year-old. If it's proven this was intentional, then it's highly likely that someone, and presumably someone close to him, has advised him to take these drugs. In that case, by all means Xerri must bear responsibility for it, if the B sample proves positive, and he will have to pay a heavy penalty. But the one to really go after, to nail to the wall with every legal resource you have, is the person who organised it.
