Why was there a six-month delay between Bronson Xerri's doping test and the rising Cronulla star's provisional suspension from the NRL?

Apart from the disappointment at one of the game's brightest young prospects returning a positive A sample, much of the frustration around the situation came from the timing of the announcement.

Former Sharks skipper Paul Gallen was scathing in his critique of ASADA following the news on the eve of the League's restart.

"Are they really there for the good of the game, are they really trying to catch people doing the wrong thing?" he asked on 2GB.

According to Daily Telegraph journalist Dean Ritchie, the delay came down to a range of external factors.

"We made official contact yesterday and the response was 'it's a private matter and we wont be telling you'," Ritchie said on Big Sports Breakfast.

"Unofficially I've been told... the November testing rolled into Christmas, which then rolled into the major national destruction of the fires, which then rolled into COVID - that's why it's been held up.

"When ASADA do come out and give us reasons why... they will be the reasons why, whether that stacks up and passes the pub test, I don't think it will."

Host Laurie Daley confirmed his scepticism regarding the timing of the suspension and investigation.

"I think when someone's phone gets confiscated and the length between the test and the announcement, I can't help but think something else is at play. I don't know," Daley added.

Xerri, 19, is facing a potential four-year ban over the positive test.

The NRL confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday, just two days out from the competition's return from the coronavirus shutdown.

"The National Rugby League (NRL) has today provisionally suspended Cronulla Sharks player Bronson Xerri under the NRL’s Anti-Doping Policy," the statement said.

"The Provisional Suspension Notice asserts that Mr Xerri returned a positive A-sample for exogenous Testosterone, Androsterone, Etiocholanolone and 5b-androstane-3a,17b-diol which are prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the NRL’s Anti-Doping Policy.

"He was tested by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) on 25 November 2019."

"Mr Xerri is prohibited from participating in any WADA compliant sport, including rugby league, while the provisional suspension is in place."

"Under the Anti-Doping Policy, Mr Xerri now has the opportunity to have his B-sample analysed.

"The NRL will not be making further comment while this process is underway."
