Tevita Pangai Jr ’s ill discipline has been a concern for the Brisbane Broncos for more than a year. It is a huge call for the Broncos considering they are in the midst of their worst NRL season and recently lost a bid to keep star forward David Fifita at the club beyond the end of the year.

Ben Ikin claims he would have offloaded Tevita Pangai Junior 12 months ago to re-sign David Fifita and has vowed to go ‘hard’ for Cameron Smith’s signature if he is appointed CEO of the Brisbane Broncos.

The 43-year-old on Tuesday confirmed he has officially entered the race to replace departing boss Paul White after submitting his resume.

Ikin, who played 55 games for the Broncos, warned things could ‘get worse’ at Red Hill if urgent changes are not implemented ahead of his formal interview on Friday.

There is also major uncertainty surrounding the future of coach Anthony Seibold, who is currently in self-quarantine after staying in Sydney on Friday night to deal with a personal matter.

Ikin did not directly address Seibold’s job security no Tuesday night but made the point he suggested that the Broncos part company with Pangai Junior 12 months ago before re-signing the ill-disciplined prop to a three-year contract extension.

“Listen I said 12 months ago on this show that Tevita Pangai (Junior) would be a player I’d be looking to offload, based purely on his football and his ill-discipline, and that was before they lost David Fifita,” Ikin told Fox Sports’ NRL 360 when asked if he would have sacked the 24-year-old following his COVID-19 breach at an alleged bikie barbershop on Saturday.

“I think there’d be an appetite for players like Tevita Pangai (Junior) in the market that you could have cleared the cap space to keep David Fifita, who I think we all agree is the player the Titans are going to build their future around.”

Asked how hard he would push for the club to sign Cameron Smith amid reports last month the Broncos are planning an audacious bid to sign the Melbourne Storm veteran, Ikin replied: “Hard, absolutely. He’s a franchise player and he gives a whole lot of standards and professionalism in the week leading up to games and the 80 minutes every week that you would want the rest of that squad to live every single day they walk through the door.”

He added when pressed to reveal other players he has identified as potential recruitment targets: “If you’re looking for senior playmakers there’s not a hell of a lot out there, Blake Green will be on the market next year, Benji Marshall is off-contract.

“But I’ve got to be honest with you, if you’re looking for quick changes it’s going to come more through good coaching and good culture than it is buying a silver bullet.

“That’s why you’d go hard for Cameron Smith because he would solve a lot of problems in one fell swoop.”
