The AFL has confirmed a man has been arrested and charged for allegedly tormenting an umpire through a series of phone calls.

A 39-year-old Frankston man was charged one count of stalking and one count of using a carriage service to menace.

It's alleged the man got a hold of the umpire's mobile phone number and repeatedly left menacing voicemails over the weekend of round nine.

The man was released on bail and will face Frankston Local Court next May.

The AFL released a statement on Friday, condemning the alleged behaviour.

“The safety and welfare of everyone in the game; on the field, off the field, and online remains our priority and we thank Victoria Police for their work to identify and charge the offender,” League footy boss Steve Hocking said.

“There is absolutely no excuse to threaten or abuse someone. It has no place at any level of our game or our society.

“This abuse affects our umpires, our players, and our staff. It is never okay and we’re not going to accept it.”

Vic Police also released a strong statement following the arrest.

“Victoria Police takes any threat against a person extremely seriously and will investigate incidents to the fullest extent,” police said.

“Anyone seeking to cause harm online or via a telecommunications device needs to remember there are serious consequences to their actions which can have devastating effects for victims.

“This behaviour is not on – it’s criminal and Victoria Police will hold people to account for their actions.”
