Kevin Walters has been officially appointed the coach of the Brisbane Broncos for 2021. Walters inked a deal this week that will keep him at Red Hill for at least two seasons.

The current Maroons coach beat out premiership-winning former Cowboys mentor Paul Green to claim the gig.

On Wednesday, Walters said that he is "very grateful" for his appointment.

"From the day I hung my boots up at the Broncos, my next objective was to be head coach of the Brisbane Broncos and I am very grateful for the opportunity," he said.

A veteran of 243 Broncos games, Walters’ new head coaching job will be his first at NRL level. He previously coached the Catalans Dragons in the English Super League from 2009-2010.

Since Walters began talks with the club last week, multiple sources close to the Broncos have endorsed him for the job.

“I think he will be good for the club in the situation it is now in,” Walters’ former coach Wayne Bennett told NRL.com.

Reports emerged during the week that the Broncos had made Craig Bellamy an offer to become the club’s new coaching director. The role would see Bellamy mentor Walters in his first NRL coaching job.

However, in a press conference following his side’s loss on Sunday, Bellamy denied he had agreed to a deal with the club.

“I can tell you right here and now that I have agreed to nothing anywhere. Anywhere,” Bellamy said.
