A former international for Great Britain and England in both rugby league and union, Burgess retired due to a shoulder injury in 2019 and has since been working as an assistant coach for the Rabbitohs . Burgess has also stepped down from his guest commentary position with Fox League.

The newspaper report alleged drug use and domestic violence by the former Rabbitohs captain, behaviour which was then alleged to have been covered The 31-year-old Burgess has also stood down from his role with Fox Sports as a rugby league analyst, confirming so in a one-line statement.

The NRL has confirmed that they will investigate the incident, with CEO Andrew Abdo revealing that Burgess had stood down from his commitments with the Rabbitohs along with Fox Sports.

"We are not going to take any action against allegations but I believe that Sam Burgess has stood himself down from South Sydney Rabbitohs and Fox League duties," Abdo said in a press conference.

The CEO also confirmed that the club doctor would still be allowed to work at the Rabbitohs until the investigation was complete.

Abdo would not be drawn on the 'serious allegations' that were being thrown out towards Burgess, however, confirmed that the organisation would take the strongest action possible towards those involved if they are found to be true.

“These are very serious allegations so it’s important we stay calm and conduct a thorough investigation,” Abdo said.

“We will look to work with the club to find out what happened and to get to the bottom of the facts. We will also co-operate with NSW Police who have also begun an investigation into the matter.

“If these allegations are proven, we will take the strongest possible action that we can but at this stage, they are just that: allegations.

“The NRL and the commission do not condone violence, abuse or intimidation of anyone, let alone a woman and we also do not condone the abuse of drugs.

“But it is important to emphasise that this is new information for the NRL and now that we have it, we will act on it and make sure we follow through, get to the bottom of the facts, get all the information and take the action that is necessary.”

Whilst he conceded that the timing of this report was "disappointing" with the finals set to start in less than 24 hours, Adbo reassured fans that this was fresh information and they would put everything into investigating the matter.

“It’s obviously disappointing,” he said.

“We’ve worked so hard this season to get to where we are and we really want to focus to be on the football, however, these are really serious matters and allegations.

“We will put all of our resources into getting into the bottom of what occurred.”
