"The club takes issues of drug use very seriously and has well-established policies and procedures in place around the use of performance enhancing or illicit/recreational/prescription drugs.

"The club will continue to work closely with ASADA and the NRL which administer testing of the players. The club will also continue to work with the playing group to support their wellbeing and educate them about drug use."

Burgess announced his shock retirement from rugby league last October due to a chronic shoulder injury.

He was still owed $3.6 million on his playing contract and has since taken up a coaching consulting role with the club.

The former England dual international last month caused a stir when he teased a possible NRL comeback with the Rabbitohs next season.

Burgess had been credited with South Sydney’s late-season resurgence after entering the club’s bubble in June.
