After Chelsea wrapped up mega-money deals for Timo Werner and Kai Havertz this summer, Hakim Ziyech's earlier arrival in a £37million deal quietly took a backseat.

Frank Lampard was quick to complete the business with Ajax to bring the Moroccan winger to Stamford Bridge, realising the need for more creativity up top to help an exciting attack flourish.

But while Lampard had dreams in his head of linking Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Werner and Havertz up top together for Chelsea, those visions quickly died early on after the former sustained a knee injury in pre-season against Brighton.

Ziyech subsequently missed the first four Premier League matches of the season, and his absence has clearly hindered the Blues' new-look attack.

Chelsea have endured a mixed start to the 2020-21 campaign, losing at home to last season's champions Liverpool and drawing to newly-promoted West Brom, but their 4-0 thumping of Crystal Palace has boosted the supporters' hopes once again.

Chelsea will be desperate to kick on starting against Southampton on Saturday, and really get their fresh era going with their star-studded attack which has struggled to take off just yet.

At Ajax, the 27-year-old had outgrown Eredivisie, producing some incredible numbers - managing a brilliant 82 assists and scoring 48 goals in just 165 appearances.

So far, Chelsea's build-up play has looked laborious and slow, with Werner and Havertz still trying to find their feet in the Premier League after joining from Germany in the summer.

Chelsea youngsters will be better for Bayern experience - Lampard Chelsea suffered a humbling 7-1 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich last season, though Frank Lampard sees the experience as a learning curve.Chelsea made it through to the knockout stages but were hammered 3-0 by eventual champions Bayern at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of their last-16 tie in March, then went down 4-1 in the second leg upon the tournament's resumption in August.

Frank Lampard could unleash Chelsea 's £37m summer signing against Southampton after starring role in Morocco win on return from injury. Hakim Ziyech helped Morocco beat Senegal 3-1 in an international friendly. The winger came on after 59 minutes and shone, assisting Morocco's third.

Lampard later told Chelsea 's website that Ziyech had suffered "a little twist to the knee that will have to be assessed." Werner has been making smart runs in behind opposition defences but his team-mates have struggled to pick him out, leaving the Germany international a lonely man up top.

But Ziyech's return should unlock Werner's special ability and allow Chelsea's attack to flourish as they look to lay down a marker in the Premier League.

Ziyech's cameo against Brighton in pre-season showed exactly what the Blues have missed out on during the embryonic stage of the new campaign.

It took less than five minutes for Ziyech to work his magic and Werner to show his cutting edge in front of goal.

After picking up the ball on the right-hand side of Brighton's half, Ziyech floated in a pinpoint in-swinging cross straight into the path of an unmarked Callum Hudson-Odoi, who inadvertently headed it towards Werner to slot home.

Just like that, Ziyech had unlocked Brighton's defence with real ease and Chelsea fans were relishing what was to come in the Premier League.

Was Lampard right to single out his keepers amid Chelsea defensive woes?

Was Lampard right to single out his keepers amid Chelsea defensive woes? After Frank Lampard suggested poor goalkeeping was the main cause of Chelsea's poor defensive record, we look at the Opta data.Ahead of Tuesday's home game against Sevilla, which will kick off the Blues' Champions League campaign, it was put to Lampard that his side were conceding enough goals for him to rank him among the club's worst bosses ever in that category.

But an injury early on in the second half at the Amex Stadium quickly dented Chelsea excitement and their fans have been made to wait to see Ziyech strut his stuff in the Premier League.

However, his return - coinciding with the comeback of Pulisic following a hamstring injury sustained against Arsenal in last season's FA Cup final defeat - couldn't have come at a better time.

With the Champions League commencing next week - Chelsea start their campaign at home to Sevilla - before travelling to Manchester United in the top-flight, Lampard really needs his attack to step up to the plate.

And opposition defences should be fearful, with Ziyech and Pulisic on either wing -  cutting in and inter-changing - they will cause havoc in the Premier League thanks to their guile and direct approach.

Put Werner and Havertz into that equation, and Chelsea really do boost one of the most fearful attacks in Europe.

Ziyech and Pulisic's return to full fitness will certainly get the best out of Werner and get him up and running in the Premier League, while Havertz will be able to shine making runs late into the penalty area with those working their magic alongside him.

If Southampton want to take anything away from Stamford Bridge on Saturday, they will have to produce a heroic performance against Chelsea's fearsome attack.

And the same could be said for most teams facing Chelsea this season...
