Having not spent a penny for a year due to their transfer ban, Chelsea made up for lost time this summer by going on the biggest spree in Premier League history.

The £253million they splashed out is more than any team has ever spent in a single transfer window before, with Germans Kai Havertz and Timo Werner the marquee signings at £90m and £53m respectively.

Veteran Brazilian defender Thiago Silva arrived on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, with Hakim Ziyech (£38m), Ben Chilwell (£50m) and Edouard Mendy (£22m) the other arrivals.

Chelsea have had a below-par start to the season, with the high being a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace. They lost at home to Liverpool and their defending was heavily criticised after 3-3 draws with supposedly inferior rivals West Brom and Southampton.

BEN CHILWELL (£50m from Leicester)

The only one of Chelsea's summer signings with Premier League experience, Chilwell was always the best bet to settle in quickest and he's done just that, scoring and assisting on his first league start against Crystal Palace after recovering from a heel injury which saw him miss the start of the season.

He is still taking pain-killers to manage that problem, but has already filled a problem position for Frank Lampard and, aged just 23, looks set to be first choice for the next decade.

KAI HAVERTZ (£90m from Bayer Leverkusen)

The most expensive signing of the lot, and by quite some way, expectations are rightly higher on the German than any of his fellow new arrivals.

Losing the ball on the edge of the box to gift Southampton a goal last time out rather summed up his stuttering start at Chelsea, but time is on the 21-year-old's side and things can only get better.

His Premier League career could not have got off to a worse start, with the Blues falling 3-0 down to West Brom after 27 minutes and the Brazilian directly responsible for one of the goals.
