Khabib Nurmagomedov has earned an emotional second-round submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 to defend his lightweight world title.

Just months after his dad, Abdulmanap, died Khabib dominated the bout, locking in a triangle choke and putting Gaethje to sleep 1:32 into the second frame.

It's Nurmagomedov's third defence of the 155-pound belt, equaling the record held by BJ Penn, Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar.

He won't add to the record though, with the 29-0 Nurmagomedov announcing his retirement in the cage immediately afterwards.

Speaking afterward, Gaethje said he'll be ready to go again in two months.

"I felt alive. That's why I step in here," he said.

"Adrenaline, endorphins released. I stuck around to praise him. He did what he had to do. He's so strong and I know he'll make his father proud.

"I fight for a living. The best thing about getting choked out is there's nothing consequential to your long-term health.

"I said I have five wars left and I haven't had one since I said that."

It took just over two minutes for Khabib's pressure and pace to show itself.

Gaethje had stayed at range, looking for kicks early on, but once he decided to turn it on, Khabib stalked the American around the cage, landing plenty.

While Khabib was his customarily clinical self, Gaethje's punches were wilder. He threw 'em with everything and even looked a little gassed.

Gaethje connected with one big left hook, but Nurmagomedov ate it easily and kept walking forward.

The Eagle stuck his first takedown in the final 30 seconds of the opening round, but ran out of time to get a submission win with an armbar.

In the second, Khabib looked like a middleweight fighting a lightweight, and despite Gaethje landing a few nice leg-kicks, Nurmagomedov hit another takedown.

Like a hot knife through butter, Nurmagomedov locked in a triangle choke.

Gaethje tapped, referee Jason Herzog missed it and the American went to sleep.
