Klopp refused to criticise his star forward for attending the wedding in his home country, where it appeared that very little social distancing was observed.

'If we knew or not (that he was going to the wedding), it is private,' said Klopp.

'Honestly, we cannot start giving little pieces of it. I did not go to my best friend's birthday party in the summer. Fifty people attended and I decided at the last minute not to go — that was only a birthday party.

'Maybe I don't have that many birthdays any more with my best friends, so it was really hard for me to decide. That's the situation we are all living in.'
