Hamburg's storks return from their winter quarters. "Four couples have already moved into their nest," said Hamburg's "stork father" Jürgen Pelch on Tuesday. The first stork in the Hanseatic city this season was the animal called Butsche. It landed on February 16 on the Altengammer main dike. "The early arrival time suggests that he wintered in Portugal or Spain," said the Nabu expert. "Now more of his kind are following."
This also includes the twelve white storks that Nabu Hamburg equipped with a transmitter as part of a research project. According to Pelch, Storch Alexander is expected to be the first of them to arrive in Hamburg. He wintered in Spain near Madrid and is already north of Bordeaux in France.
“The storks Tina and Ombeni, who both have their winter quarters in East African Tanzania, also seem to be making their way to Northern Europe around 10,000 kilometers away. In the research project, they are the white storks with the longest migration routes, ”says Pelch.
The return of the storks in February is very unusual. Usually the male animal returns to its ancestral nest first and prepares it for its partner. Last year, 34 pairs of storks raised 70 young animals in the Hanseatic city.
