The golf star crashed his car at 7:12 a.m. local time when he was traveling north on Hawthorne Boulevard alone. The vehicle was badly damaged, another was not involved.

Rory McIlroy will wear Tiger Woods' iconic red shirt and black pants combo for the final round of the WGC Workday Championship, in tribute to the injured golf icon.

Woods, 45, badly injured his right leg in a single-vehicle crash in Los Angeles County last week. Authorities believe he was lucky to have survived the high-speed accident.

Woods has won 15 major championships wearing a red shirt for the final round, and has also notched 82 PGA Tour tournament wins.

Four-time major winner McIlroy will pay tribute in fitting fashion on Sunday (Monday AEDT), according to The Golf Channel, and will likely be joined by other players.

McIlroy offered one of the most touching reflections on Woods' accident, bringing perspective to the situation amid fears that his golf career is over.

"At this stage I think everyone should just be grateful that he's here, that he's alive, that his kids haven't lost their dad," McIlroy said.

"That's the most important thing. Golf is so far from the equation right now, it's not even on the map at this point."

McIlroy fired a six-under 66 in the third round of the WGC event at The Concession Golf Club in Florida, leaving him 11-under after 54 holes and some chance of challenging for victory. Collin Morikawa leads at 15-under after shooting five-under 67 in the third round.
