An Adelaide United youth product, Richards walked away from a promising football career in July 2020 to chase another sporting passion.

The 21-year-old had made his A-League debut in 2019 having also previously played in the FFA Cup for the Reds but felt his true calling was in the ring and not on the pitch.

"I saw football as a great pathway to get myself out of some wrong things I was once doing in my life and it’s helped me develop as a person," Richards said at the time.

"I have to thank Adelaide United for giving me an opportunity to be a professional footballer and helping to steer me on the right path. I owe them a lot.

"To me, mixed martial arts has always been my own personal form of self expression. It helps me understand and deal with my emotions. I’m excited to be bringing myself out of my comfort zone and looking forward to dedicating my life to my true passion: mixed martial arts."

Over the past several months, Richards' journey to becoming an MMA fighter has been filmed by Ethos Documentaries with The Perfect Storm released on February 28.

The documentary spends plenty of time at a fighting-focused gym with Richards revealing it had been calling him before he hung up the boots.

"I came in here a few times while I was playing soccer," Richards says early on in the documentary.

"Actually wasn't meant to technically come into a place like this because of the risk of injury and stuff like that. I just knew this was the right place."

Richards goes onto make a memorable MMA debut, cheered on by his former Adelaide United teammates, and he's clearly committed to making it in a second sport if his first fight is anything to go by.
