Derby County's 2007-08 Premier League season has gone down in history as the competition's worst and Australian Mile Sterjovski found himself right in the middle of it all.

The 43-cap Socceroo joined Derby in January 2008 after a short stint in Turkey and struggled to make an impact at a club in an epic free fall.

"To be honest, it was very difficult. It was also difficult coming to the English mentality coming from Europe where I felt everything was very well structured and done well," Sterjovski told Sporting News.

"I’m not sure if it was the situation Derby County were in at the time but I felt like it wasn't very well run. I found it difficult to integrate and integrate into the team."

Though Sterjovski missed Derby's sole Premier League win that season, he still looks back at his time at the club with some surprising fondness.

Having previously enjoyed more successful stints in France and Switzerland with Lille and FC Basel respectively, the Aussie always had one eye on playing in England.

"For me, I came halfway through the season and it was a very tough season, tough to turn things around, but I really enjoyed my time at Derby," he said.

"I felt like the fans were brilliant and really loyal despite the results and some of the performances that the team put in.

"It was difficult times but I achieved my goal of playing in the Premier League which is what I wanted to do and even though it was a terrible season, we had a couple of little highlights and one of them was beating Manchester United in one of the cup games there at home.

"Even though it was probably the worst season in their history, we managed to put in a good performance against a top team. So I have some good memories as well."

Incidentally, that win against the Red Devils actually came the following season in the League Cup, with Derby's 1-0 win in the semi-final undone after they lost 4-2 in the second-leg at Old Trafford.

Sterjovski's second season with the Rams also didn't exactly go to plan with a managerial change ensuring his stint at the club remained a short one.

"We went to the Championship and a quarter of the way through that next season Paul Jewell got the sack and Nigel Clough came in, and when things like that happen different managers have different ideas," Sterjovski said.

"Under him I didn't play as much as I would've liked and only ended up staying until the end of the season before moving to Perth."

Sterjovski would end his playing career in the A-League with Central Coast Mariners and is currently working as an assistant coach with Macarthur FC.
