Family of Sydney retiree plead with government to help free him

Family of Sydney retiree plead with government to help free him The family of a 71-year-old Western Sydney man jailed overseas on trumped up charges are begging the Australian Government to help bring him home. Fears are growing over the deteriorating health of Chau Van Kham, a retired baker from Berala with several medical conditions, as he languishes in difficult conditions in Thu Duc prison in Vietnam. His wife and two adult sons have repeatedly appealed to Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne for help since he was arrested just over two years ago.

Socceroos icon Mark Schwarzer has revealed a number of clubs attempted to bring him out of retirement with the latest bid coming from an English side when the Aussie was turning 46.

After a decorated playing career, the veteran goalkeeper hung up his gloves in 2016 following a stint with Leicester City.

Just two years prior, the green and gold legend became the oldest player to make his Champions League debut when he lined up for Chelsea against Atletico Madrid in 2014 at the age of 41.

While Schwarzer's final four seasons in the Premier League saw him remain largely on the bench, he showed when he was on the pitch that age wasn't holding him back too much.

Over $3.7 million stolen from this small business and put into the pokies, but clubs can keep the money

Over $3.7 million stolen from this small business and put into the pokies, but clubs can keep the money Vicki Clerke, 64, is in prison for stealing millions of dollars from her employer to fund her pokies habit. Her boss is now asking one of Sydney's biggest clubs for his money back."I was slightly nervous and a little excited because I could see the possibility of retirement was within reach. I was thinking, 'OK, this is the first step in the process that will see me enjoying life in Tasmania.

As such, a number of clubs tried to lure the Aussie out of retirement once he decided to stop playing, with Championship side Derby County trying their luck as late as 2018 when Schwarzer would have turned 46.

"I think I had about three offers to come back out of retirement," Schwarzer said on Optus Sport's Two Sharp Reds podcast.

"I retired in 2016 and 2018 was the last time I got offered an opportunity to come back out of retirement. It was pretty flattering. Obviously had to decline.

"When you're out for that long, particularly at my age, it goes really, really quickly. I reckon I would've broken down all the time.

"The last one was at Championship level...it was Derby County because I knew the goalkeeping coach. They were short on numbers, had a few injuries and he wanted me to come in and do a job.

Friend retires from NRL on medical advice

Friend retires from NRL on medical advice Sydney Roosters co-captain Jake Friend has announced his immediate retirement from the NRL after 264 games for the club following extensive medical advice. The 31-year-old three-time premiership winner said he made the decision after extensive medical advice following a third concussion in less than six months.

"I would have at least been a number two sitting on the bench, if not playing, if and when needed. I just said, 'Listen, I can't do it. I won't do myself justice and I won't do you any justice.'

"When you've stopped playing and doing the day to day at that level because the intensity is so great you lose it really, really quickly.

"I'd made my mind up. I actually wasn't missing it. The first year after I retired I did nothing. Did zero exercise, I put on weight, I was pretty shocking when I looked at myself in the mirror."

Schwarzer also revealed he turned down the chance to become a training keeper with Manchester United following his decision to step away from the game.

In the years since hanging up his boots, the Socceroos legend has moved heavily into media and is a regular pundit for Optus Sport.
