England manager Gareth Southgate is set to be without 12 members of his squad in the build-up to the Euro 2020 finals as the prospect of all-English European finals threatens to derail the national team's tournament preparations.

Chelsea will face Manchester City in Istanbul on May 29, just four days before England face Austria in their first tournament warm-up game.

It means the likes of Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, John Stones and Raheem Sterling - who are all likely to be named in Southgate's 26-man squad - will miss the clash at the Riverside Stadium.

Southgate will give all his players up to seven days off following their final games of the season, meaning Chelsea and Manchester City stars could also miss the final warm-up fixture against Romania on June 6.

It also appears likely that Southgate will be without at least four more players for the start of his Euros preparation due to Premier League involvement in the Europa League final, which is scheduled for May 26.

Manchester United are almost certain to reach the final following their 6-2 win over Roma in the first leg of their semi-final, meaning Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Dean Henderson are expected to miss the game against Austria.

If Arsenal overturn their 2-1 deficit against Villarreal, then Bukayo Saka will also miss the start of England's build-up.

It means Southgate could be without as many as 12 players for the opening days of England's training camp, hardly an ideal scenario for the Three Lions boss as he heads into the tournament.

While the physical fitness of his players is of obvious concern to Southgate following a punishing season, the psychological impact of the forthcoming European finals is also understood to a significant concern for the England boss.

Southgate faces the prospect of trying to lift a number of players who will have just suffered one of the biggest disappointments of their careers ahead of the tournament.

Equally, players coming off the high of lifting a European trophy will also be something Southgate will have to keep an eye on ahead of the tournament.

However, the absence of as many as half-a-dozen players is likely to provide the likes of Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish - who will head into the tournament off the back of injuries - an opportunity to play extended minutes in the warm-up matches.
