Recently retired NRL veteran Blake Green has been unveiled as the inaugural head coach of the Newcastle Knights' NRLW side.

The NRL confirmed on Friday Newcastle, Parramatta and Gold Coast had been granted licenses and would be admitted into this year's women's competition.

The new inclusions will see the competition expanded to six teams, after the New Zealand Warriors were forced to withdraw due to the ongoing complications of the pandemic.

After retiring in May, Green will make a move into coaching, starting with leading the Knights women's team in their first season.

“We’re really excited to have the Newcastle Knights compete in the NRLW,” Green said.

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Round 13 The toughest time for tipping is upon us, with State of Origin putting a broom through the competition. Here are The Roar’s NRL expert tipping panel for Round 13. “I can’t wait to play my part in creating the right environment and pathways for women in rugby league, especially here in Newcastle.

“Our clear intention is to get this right from the start because we only have one opportunity to do so.

“I will be leaning on all my learnings and experience from 14 seasons in the NRL, as well as a very strong staff and core group of players who will continue a great tradition of representing rugby league in the Hunter.”

Green announced his retirement from the NRL last month after a long 15-year professional career that ended with the Knights.

The 34-year-old playmaker debuted with Parramatta in 2007 and amassed 270 senior games with the Sharks, Bulldogs, Storm, Sea Eagles, Warriors and Knights, as well as a stint in Super League with Hull KR and Wigan.
