Sport Kane should have been SUBBED earlier against Croatia, says Carragher
Fans claim Harry Kane deserved Premier League gong over Ruben Dias
Fans have reacted with anger after Manchester City defender Ruben Dias was named Premier League Player of the Year - as they believed Harry Kane was more worthy of the award. Portuguese defender Dias was crowned as the league's best player by England's top-flight on Saturday after being a standout player in Pep Guardiola's defence as City romped to the title. But supporters expressed their disapproval of the choice for the award, even though the prize was partly decided by a fan vote, as they believed England captain Kane - who finished the year as top goalscorer and assist maker - deserved it more.
should have been substituted 10 minutes before he was taken off by in England's win against Croatia at Wembley, according to Jamie Carragher.
The 27-year-old managed just one shot in the whole game and missed a great chance with it at the back post to double the Three Lions' lead from Mason Mount's cross after Raheem Sterling had put them ahead.
Midfielder, 17, replaced the striker with eight minutes of the 90 remaining, with former forward Alan Shearer commenting after the game that Kane looked 'a little bit slow' in England's Group D opener.
Pep Guardiola 'wants Grealish and Kane to link up with Foden'
City are ready to smash the British transfer record to make Grealish the first £100million player with Kane also firmly in their sights after the striker told Tottenham he wanted to leave. According to ESPN, Guardiola wants both players to link up with fellow England international Foden, with the City boss believing he and Grealish could help them dominate the Premier League for the next five years.
Kane starred at the last major tournament England were involved in, scoring six times at the 2018 World Cup to win the Golden Boot in a pursuit of goals Carragher described as 'single-minded' which served them well.
And the ex-England defender believes that the current striker is not the same one that starred in Russia three years ago, and insists Kane must accept he is not exempt from being taken off by Southgate.
'Kane barely featured in the victory and looked exhausted,'.
Roy Keane says Harry Kane ISN'T a good captain for England
Kane will go into the tournament as Gareth Southgate's skipper as he bids to lead the Three Lions to glory off the back of a superb season that saw him walk away with the golden boot.Keane has been continuing his Road to Wembley series with fellow pundit Micah Richards for SkyBet, giving their take on the biggest issues ahead of Euro 2020, and the Irishman had some strong views on Kane, who will be one of England's key hopes of taking home the trophy.
'Brave as it seems for an England manager to substitute his captain, it was the right and obvious call.
'This may become the new reality for Kane. England can get the most from him with a premeditated plan, demanding he give everything for 65-70 minutes before being replaced by fresh legs.
'The days of keeping him on the pitch so he can make the most of every minute in pursuit of the Golden Boot are over.
'Whatever approach Gareth Southgate takes – and whatever happens for the rest of the tournament – we must adjust to the fact that this is not the same Kane who went to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and fulfilled his ambition to be the leading goalscorer. More importantly, the England captain must accept that, too.'
Carragher's comments differ to a certain extent from his former England team-mate Frank Lampard, who insisted Kane's lethargic performance should not be of concern to England.
England 1-0 Croatia: Raheem Sterling nets winner to earn win
MARTIN SAMUEL AT WEMBLEY: Raheem Sterling justified Gareth Southgate's shock decision to pick him in England's Euro 2020 opener by netting the winner. Each first was of true significance, too. This is a finals group that could have unfolded rather uncomfortably had England dropped points yesterday, not least with a grudge match against Scotland up next. For Sterling, his place has been under pressure from people’s choice Jack Grealish, among others, of late, so to take the match-winning goal with such bravery and confidence was a huge vindication of his selection.
'I would not worry about Harry Kane, he is our man,' Lampard said. 'Save one today, the team played really well, there will be a really positive feel about the group.
'Harry Kane will deliver when it comes.'
Asked if there were any negatives from England's point of view, ex-England forward Shearer said: 'Only possibly Harry Kane, he looked a little bit slow, that ball that came across I was expecting him to put it away.
'But England with playing well did not create that many chances for him to get on the end of, but other than Harry Kane everyone looked really sharp.'
Southgate however praised Kane's performance, stating: 'I think he led the line really well. It was a game where he had to take a lot of physical buffeting. A lot of the game for him today was to link and create spaces, which he did for the goal, to let others play.'
'There are days when chances will fall to him but today he was really tightly marked by their team. They know what a threat he is, and he was crowded out.
'I've not seen his chance at far post yet to see how good a chance that was. But he brings so much more to our team than the goals.'
Kane scored 23 Premier League goals for Spurs in the 2020-21 season to go with 14 assists, with both returns the most of any player in the top flight in that season.
Shearer insisted growing speculation around his club future would not be affecting him at Euro 2020, as links with a mega-money move to Manchester City continue.
Man City 'reluctant over drawn-out transfer saga over Harry Kane' .
Kane has endured a difficult start for England at Euro 2020, having failed to score yet in the group stage, and question marks continue to surround his future with a £150million move on the cards. City are one of the few clubs who may be able to match Spurs' price tag, but The Telegraph have claimed they are keen to thrash out a deal sooner rather then later, instead of waiting until the start of the season.
