The NSW government is trialling a home quarantine program with Paralympic athletes who returned to Australia from Japan earlier this month.

NSW Health confirmed to the Herald that 17 Paralympians are undergoing 14-day quarantine at their homes after exemptions by the state government.

Every Paralympian who competed in Tokyo was double-vaccinated before departure, with those quarantining at home undergoing the same COVID-19 testing as those in the hotel system.

"This model has been included as part of the NSW home quarantine trial which has allowed more Paralympians to participate," a NSW Health spokeswoman said in a statement.

SA expands home quarantine trial

SA expands home quarantine trial South Australia has expanded its COVID-19 home quarantine trial to involve some returning defence force personnel. The system uses a new app to electronically monitor those in isolation, employing facial recognition technology and in-person checks.

South Australians returning from the Paralympics might avoid the double- quarantine hell that greeted some of their Olympic counterparts.Olympians who returned to SA via Sydney quarantine had to endure another two weeks of isolation at home because of the NSW outbreak. But the Australian team will not stay at the Howard Springs quarantine facility near Darwin with its fresh air access, like many Olympians, because it lacks enough wheelchair facilities. Team chef de mission Kate McLoughlin said they had negotiated with state governments to streamline their return as much as possible.

"Exemptions were provided to 17 Paralympians to home quarantine where it was considered they would be more suitably cared for in their home due to high care needs, including equipment requirements."

Dual gold medallist Madison de Rozario, who won a thrilling wheelchair marathon on the final day of competition, was the highest-profile athlete to be granted an exemption for home quarantine.

Her coach, Louise Sauvage, arguably Australia's greatest Paralympian, was also given permission to go home rather than be confined to a hotel for 14 days.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the state government was considering expanding its home quarantine trials for fully vaccinated Australians.

"The NSW government is close to piloting some home quarantine options for returning Australians," Ms Berejiklian said in a statement on Tuesday.

The payout is conditional on a very big commitment.Following Tokyo 2020 it has been widely reported that Australian Olympians are paid $20,000 from the AOC for winning gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. While this is true, the money is conditional.

South Australians returning from overseas will likely be able to quarantine in their own homes by the end of the year - the state will run a national pilot program. We absolutely will Mike. The premier flagged this possibility as recently as yesterday but today at a meeting of national leaders it was agreed the nation's first ever home quarantine program will be carried out here in this state. It'll be a 2 week trial initial and tonight we can reveal it'll likely start in early September.

"As our vaccination rate rises in NSW, we will have more options for alternate quarantine arrangements for those who are fully vaccinated."

Ms Berejiklian last week said the hotel quarantine system was close to reaching its "use-by date" and indicated her government was already considering how home quarantine would work for fully vaccinated travellers.

The 17 athletes would undergo the same COVID-19 testing as those in hotel quarantine, the statement said.

Some athletes left Japan before the Games concluded on September 5, but most arrived in Australia last Tuesday and Wednesday on charter flights to Sydney and Melbourne.

Athletes have been undergoing regular tests, with the main Sydney cohort set to exit hotel quarantine next week.

Athletes with home quarantine permission were escorted by police through Sydney Airport last Tuesday after they had gone through customs.

Dan Andrews UNLEASHES at Morrison's $1.5billion package for Sydney A $1.5billion-a fortnight relief package for Sydney prompted a scathing reply from Dan Andrews who claimed Victorians were 'sick and tired' of having to beg the federal government for support. But the government hit back saying Victoria received the same support for its most recent two week lockdown as NSW has had for the last fortnight, with the new policy also available to any state who experiences restrictions from now on.'Everyone in Australia believes that people in Sydney and NSW deserve every possible support as they battle a second wave and a long lockdown,' Mr Andrews said in a statement.

Millions in New South Wales could be among the first Australians to dust off their passports as plans for a home quarantine pilot for returning travellers takes off. NSW tourism minister Stuart Ayres is leading calls for ‘ home -based’ and ‘shorter’ quarantine system. He described the current 14-day hotel quarantine as not ‘fit for purpose’ in a vaccinated society. ‘It would be a travesty if fear prevented us from capturing one of the biggest tourism opportunities in our history,’ Mr Ayres told the Daily Telegraph.

Australia will also begin trialling home quarantine arrangements for vaccinated travellers. Mr Morrison said arrival limits would not be lifted again until most Australians get vaccinated - a goal that will not be achieved until next year due to the country's limited supply of jabs. If you' re an Australian stranded overseas, this is not The new rules aim to reduce the risk of Covid escaping travellers in quarantine and spreading into the wider community. Some were greeted by family who met them at the airport, just metres away from buses that other athletes were transported on to their hotel quarantine.

Other Paralympians on the list include swimmers Alexander Tuckfield, who has cerebral palsy, as well as boccia players Daniel Michel, who has spinal muscular atrophy type two, and Spencer Cotie, who has cerebral palsy. Michel and Cotie, for example, require carers.

"Feeling for my crew doing it tough in hotel quarantine," Michel wrote on Instagram recently. "Shower them with gifts aplenty."

Those taking part in the home trial were allowed to be with family members of the same household. However, not every returning athlete was permitted to quarantine at home, with dozens still spending the 14-day period in Sydney CBD hotels.

Paralympics Australia declined to comment when contacted, but the Australian team's chef de mission Kate McLoughlin expressed appreciation for the NSW government's help in allowing the team to travel to and from Tokyo.

"We're really grateful that we've been given this privileged position of being in a position to leave the country and come back home," McLoughlin said.
