Bolton Wanderers captain Antoni Sarcevic is joining non-league Stockport County in a shock move following a bust-up with his manager Ian Evatt.

Sarcevic, 29, skippered Bolton to promotion from League Two last season but argued with Evatt after being left out of the starting line-up for the midweek trip to Plymouth, leaving both men feeling there was no chance of a reconciliation.

Stockport, who are ambitious to win promotion to the EFL from the National League, immediately stepped in with an offer on of a three-year deal and with no transfer window restrictions in their division, Sarcevic is expected to complete the move shortly.

Ironically, Stockport face Bolton in the FA Cup first round on November 6.

The suddenness of Sarcevic’s departure will stun Bolton fans. He signed for them from Plymouth in 2020, was immediately given the armband by Evatt and scored 11 goals in 52 games.

County is a natural destination for Sarcevic, who finished his youth development at Woodley Sports, a non-league club based in Stockport.

Sarcevic came through Manchester City's academy before leaving aged 16 for Woodley Sports.

He made his Football League debut in 2010 for Crewe Alexandra before spells with Chester City, Fleetwood Town, Shrewbury Town and Plymouth Argyle.

He joined Bolton from Plymouth on a two-year deal in July 2020 and was named captain before the start of the season.

'T20 win could make Morgan England's greatest captain'

'T20 win could make Morgan England's greatest captain' Eoin Morgan could lay claim to being England's best-ever captain if he lifts the ICC T20 World Cup, says former team-mate Ryan Sidebottom. Morgan's leadership has transformed England from 50-over flops in 2015 to 2019 World Cup champions and his side will begin their bid to claim a second global ICC title in as many years when they take on West Indies on Saturday - live on Sky Sports Cricket.

Sarcevic proved a perfect choice and helped steer Bolton straight back to League One, scoring seven goals as they finished third to seal automatic promotion.

He started every game of this campaign back in the third tier of English football but was benched for the trip to former club Plymouth.

He came off the bench in the 62nd minute and came close to scoring but the exclusion from the line-up against his old club seems to have hit Sarcevic hard.
