PNG fight off brave Ireland in error-ridden, passionate RLWC clash

PNG fight off brave Ireland in error-ridden, passionate RLWC clash There were plenty of knock-ons, but didn't it keep you on the edge of your seat?!The Kumuls were the short-priced favourites to get the job done, but 20 errors prevented them from repeating their effort against Wales, with the Irish racking up 17 mistakes of their own as the ball hit the deck almost every two minutes.

However, the win sets up a quarter final berth with England next week in which Coach Michael Marum and skipper David Mead sees as a daunting task ahead one which the Kumuls can’t afford to make simple errors during the game.

It’s probably not the wisest career move but Brisbane and Papua New Guinea star David Mead is hoping to ruin Broncos and England coach Wayne Bennett’s day when the two nations collide in Sunday’s RLWC quarter-final in Melbourne.

Mead will captain the Kumuls against Bennett’s heavily-favoured England side at AAMI Park, with a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs.

The Kumuls are undefeated in the tournament so far after victories over Wales, Ireland and USA in the pool stage.

They face a big step up in opposition this weekend but Mead is daring to dream of a massive upset against the Poms and his veteran club coach.

“I think he’ll certainly help them be a stronger side,” Mead said of Bennett.

There’s no doubt that Wayne’s obviously a very good coach and he’s got a good record.

“He’s a big boost for England but hopefully we spoil the party for them on Sunday afternoon.

Asked what PNG’s successful campaign will do for the code in rugby-league mad PNG, Mead replied: “It’s going to help the game grow in Papua New Guinea and make it stronger.”

“As long as we’re consistent with the junior football in PNG as well and helping that develop, I think that’s certainly going to make the country stronger as a nation.

“And I believe all the other Pacific teams as well – Tonga, Fiji, Samoa – all those teams are going to certainly benefit from this Rugby League World Cup and hopefully the game gets stronger and we can compete with the top nations on a consistent basis.”

Meninga wary of 'high-quality' Hayne .
Mal Meninga reiterated his belief Jarryd Hayne 'wasn't playing well enough' to make Australia's Rugby League World Cup squad – then in the next breath the Kangaroos coach lauded the enigmatic Fiji five-eighth. The Hayne Plane was snubbed from the Kangaroos squad after a tumultuous 2017 season for the Gold Coast Titans. He has shown glimpses of his best throughout Fiji’s campaign, including the Bati’s shock 4-2 upset victory over New Zealand in last Saturday’s quarter-final.The 29-year-old scored a hat-trick for the Kangaroos against Fiji in Australia’s 64-0 victory over the Bati in the 2013 semi-final.
